Default New to me...Dearborn 10-1 2 BT plow

I have a tiller, but have been thinking about picking up an old plow for use as a first pass on heavy sod ground. Since I was off today, I decided to make a trip to TSC. Wouldn't you know it.... on my way there I spotted an old plow sitting at the side of the road with a for sale sign. This was about 10 minutes from my house.

I stopped and looked at it.....well, $200 later and....now I am the owner of a dearborn 10-1 plow. It has 2 14" bottoms on it. I don't know much about plows....but it looked similar to an old ford plow I used to use while growing up.

I remember my dad replacing the plow shares on our old plow....and was wondering if it is even possible to find replacement / new shares for this old plow...so as to "tune" this baby up. Also, what to heck is a shin?

We have had too much rain in the last 2 days to try this puppy out, ....if I had only picked it up earlier in the week.

So I am looking for any advice any of you out there can offer up. Any of you guys have the same plow? How does she do?

PS.... I bought 2 plows today....the other was a middle buster at TSC to use for potatoes. I bad...right?

    Good going.
Here is a site that shows the 10-1 reconditioned. Might be others.

I think it was PineRidge that has some information on Dearborn plows, and has posted it here in the past.

Dearborn is Ford... That was the name on Fords implements, prior to the late 40's. Some of those plows have bottoms with "throw-away shares". If so, there will be a share, or point, that runs along the leading edge. It is about 4" wide. Above that is the moldboard. On the leading edge of the moldboard, there MIGHT be another replaceable edge, about 3" wide (slight taper from bottom to top edge) THAT is the shin. Some old plows dont have a replaceable shin.

There is a place in Pennsylvania that sells replacement parts for those older plows. I don't have the name with me at this time. I'll follow the thread, and try to get you the name if it doesn't surface.

Good old plows. They were "original equipment" behind hundreds of thousands of 9N,2N, and 8N Fords.

Doc was right we have a Dearborn 2-bottom also and have been collecting information on it for some time. Dearborn's are a lot better than any of the modern plows that you can buy at places like TSC. Once the cam is set up it's really pretty straightforward to use the plow after that. Your Dearborn information is here I hope it helps you!

The later model Dearborn plows look like this. Notice the A-Frame is heavier and the points, shins and moldboards are individual and less expensive to repair or replace. This series was later branded Ford--Ken Sweet

Thanks Mike and Ken, and others....

Mine looks to be the older dearborn.... not the newer economy model as shown in Ken's photo.... eg it doesn't have the shins....just a share on the bottom which has that funny little curve to it.

I was used to seeing straight edges on the shares...and when I first saw that I was thinking , man this is really worn to have that curve in it. But both shares looked the same...so thought that must be the way they are made.

I can understand why they started to put replacable shins on the front of the newer models. The front of my moldboards are roughed up some. I think it should work "as is" for me...just doing garden plots.... but wouldn't mind trying to fix it up.

How do I know if my shares need to be replaced? Mike, did you replace the shares on yours, and if so....where can you get a set?

It has been years since we have been able to get parts for the older series at affordable prices, if at all. I would be very interested in a parts source for the shares and moldboards. The parts for the newer series are available at most TSC and hardware supply houses for Points/shares $12 each, shins $8 each and moldboards $48 each--Ken Sweet

hello if the curve you are talki9ng about is on the front ,bottom it is a deep sucking one . we use them when the ground does not let the plow suck into the ground . just my 2 cents lol alton

Thanks Ken... It is starting to look like I am going to have a very hard time replacing either the shares or moldboards.

I would be also very interested in hearing whether anyone out there knows a source as to where/how to get moldboards/shares for these older dearborn 10-1 plows.

I would like to tune this one up if possible.....
