Wheel disc/3-point disc switch-er-oo

At the farm, I have a 24' wheel disc that takes care of any BIG JOBS. At the house I have an old International Harvester #350 wheel disc that's 8'-6" wide. It is for any small jobs. It replaced a cheaper 3-point disc that was going to self-destruct behind my 2440 Deere. It was a 7'-6" light-weight (LMC) pick-up disc that was INTENDED for a 45 HP tractor, and light work. I liked the ease of loading the 3-point disc on my trailer. The wheel disc is a load (size-wise) when loaded behind the tractor. It's a good, heavy disc for it's size, but I miss that 3-pointer..... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

After about an hour of measuring, looking, thinking, and talking to myself, I've decided that the old IH wheel disc would be a piece of cake to convert to a 3-pointer. It would loose about 300lbs. in the transition. There are already holes drilled in most of the parts that actually line up with no drilling to bolt together 90% of the conversion. Some of the exsisting hitch will work perfectly as tha "A-frame" of the 3-point hitch top mounting point. A CAT II drawbar will bolt right up to 4 exsisting holes to form the lower link points. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Sounds and looks like an easy task. My only question is.... HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER TRIED SOMETHING LIKE THIS????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I did it on an old JD M soil ripper. It's a much lighter weight than a wheeled disc.

I bought an old Graham Hamey (?) 12 ft pull type chisel plow years ago. I needed about a 6 ft chisel for my 40HP Ford. Did the same thing as you are thinking.

Paid $40 for the unit at auction, torched it apart (mostly) at the auction site, hauled it home and used parts of the frame for the 3PT hitch.

A guy at the auction came up afterward and gave me $20 for the two outside extension shanks that would go on his unit. Sold the left over iron for scrap, and ended up with a NICE 6 shank 3PT chisel plow.

I had my eye on an old old OLD pull type disc--the kind you pull a level and it changes the gang angles, but it didn't have the frame needed to make it 3PT--and it sold anyway before I got it.

Right now I can’t say “I’ve done that”, but it’s in my plans... I gave a friend enough parts to put a 2-row bedder together, 4 disk gangs and a 7’ toolbar. He’ll have to fabricate the 3PH hookup. While I was at his shed dropping the parts out of the FEL bucket he showed me an old JD pull-type disk that he’s had for a long time with intentions of building a pickup type from. He’s decided that his old ford tractor isn’t large enough to handle the weight and has been urging me to take it as my tractor should be able to handle it. I haven’t gotten serious enough yet to do close measurements, etc. but it looks like I should be able to build a square frame from heavy 4” angle and buy a piece of square tubing to fabricate the pieces that the gangs hang from to adjust the cutting angle of the gangs. Shouldn’t be much to it but a little hard work...
