Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

I bought a new brush hog sq 600 today and the pto shaft will not go all the way on. the shaft [at the tractor. mower side went on like normal]. it seems like the roller balls in the inside will not retract. the shaft was left out side in the rain, the instructions were in a bag full of water. i have used brake cleen to get the dirt and grease out WD40 to get the balls rolling but can't get them to retract. the collar seems to move
freely now. is it me. or the shaft. any thoughts? i would like to start mowing with out having to go back to the dealer thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

I'd say look for paint inside the female end of the PTO shaft that is hard to slide (and myabe you already have). Sometimes the painter coats it up real good and it is thick in the splines and need a good scraping with a narrow screwdriver, or similar tool.

Also, may be rusty in there, but that would be more evident to you.

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

The mower spline was rusty but that end went right in. the other end goes on but when it gets to the rollers it stops. i have tried to push them in with a small screw driver, but i don't want to gall them. i also tried pushing the collar forward and using the other end like a slide hammer but i don't want to hammer it to hard because i might not be doing something right

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

There's usually a pin that locks the release pin, the ball and the spring in place. You'll need to drive the pin out, remove everything, clean it up, and reassemble. It's probably rusted inside.

You might get lucky by soaking it in Kroil or PB Blaster. If so, you won't have to disassemble it.

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

You ARE doing what it takes to get the balls to retract, right?
I had a couple implements. One had a pin to push and the other you had to twist the collar, then I got one that you had to pull the collar back to bet the balls to release. It took me a while before I discovered this and I tried everything under the sun before looking for a different way to release the balls.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

Done the same thing. I can't remember the details, but it involved a collar and not doing what it took to release it. I'll look when I'm near my tiller again.

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

all you have to do dummy is push the inner collar[the big silver one back instead of pushing the black outer collar forward better instructions could have prevented this but i learned something new today. and that's a good thing. thanks to all who replied

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

I had a hunch. It sure would be nice if they standardized these things. I like the kind that twist, myself.

Exactly what I did. Xept it was July and hot. I even took a pic today in case you hadn't solved the puzzle yet. I'll post it anyways cause I've seen this come up before here.

Re: Can\'t get PTO shaft on tractor

thank you for the picture. I would give you a favorable job reference as a technical writer if you would go to Italy and make new instructions for this company.just a simple picture and a few words is all it would take. Thanks again WW
