I want to get a post hole digger for my JD 4410 that will go 48" deep. That's required by the Building Code here to stay below the frost level. But most of the ones I've seen are limited to 42". Anyone got got a solution?
Thanks, JR

With 42" out of the hole, a hand held (manual) PHD would get the last 6" out in no time.

They do make extensions for the post hole digger that will let you go deeper. The problem I see with them is that the 3-point hitch may not raise high enough to lift the auger out of the hole, so you'd be digging the 42", stop and put the extension on, finish digging, and stop again to remove the extension before lifting the auger out of the ground.

Yep, a digging bar and a hand operated PHD. You should have them on hand anyway.

I have a Lienbaugh that goes down about 42-44". I got a 8" extension for it and I'm glad I did. With my 4330 I can just move the tractor around with the extension on.
I see the advantage of digging the whole hole with the auger is a nice flat still compacted hole bottom.

Can you lift the entire auger completely out of the hole with the extension on?

How many holes are you talking about? Is it few enough that you can just use a had held post hole digger for that last 6 inches? Might just be cheaper and easier in the long run.

I can clear the hole if I grab the long bar thats attached to the gear box and pull it down. This rotates the PHD just enough so that the auger clears the hole and I can move the tractor around.

Hmm - off the 120 holes I put in 2 yrs ago, I think all of them required additional work with the hand digger. It just doesn't pull out all the loose dirt. Most of them required getting out a few stones too. Still need the hand tools to finish the job!

I need to dig 30 holes on this job but I plan to use it on many of my jobs. I'm a building contractor.
