I found a good deal on a John Deere 4 bottom semimounted plow with lift cylinder, can I remove 1 or even 2 plows and it funtion properly with only 2 or 3 plows on it?

Depending on what you expect out of it. My initial thinking is that if you pull off the front two moldbaords, it will most likely throw it out of balance, and not track correctly.

It seems your tractor would pull 4 bottoms if you add duals, send indydirtfarmer a PM, I just read that had one and get his opinion

Not sure which JD plow model you have, but you should be able to pull 4 bottoms with a Ford 4000 if you have adequate weight on the rear tires (read that enough cast iron /plus/or fluid filled rears. I wouldn't even consider "duals" as the furrow tires won't get into the furrow with "twins". A 3000 Ford will pull a Ford 101 plow with 3 bottoms relatively well. Obviously if the JD is a 16 or an 18" plow you may want to try an drop the rear plow bottom. I know this can be done on some Ford plows. Not sure about the JD. I'd give it a pull as is and see what happens. Pls note if the cylinder runs the tail wheel up/down you may be stuck as is anyway, as the distance of the piston is the critical issue. BobG in VA

Most all the Deere semi-mounted plows I've seen are box-tube framed. They don't lend themselves to reducing size very well, but it can be done. Remove rear bottom, and move steering wheel forward.

Truss-frame plows can be reduced quite easily. Unbolt, and re-assemble....

As Ken Sweet has already said, 3 (relatively scarce) 4, 5, and 6 bottom semi-mounted plows are at less than scrap prices around these parts. (They're a BEAR to move...)

Anything 3 bottom or less...GIVE ME A 3-POINT PLOW!!!!
