I have 2 5.5' wide tilled row that I intend to plant gladiolus bulbs in. I need to get them about 6" under dirt. I'd sure like to find something I can drag behind my tractor (JD4310) that will make 5 or 6 nice 6"+ deep troughs. I have a box-end scraper and I considered using the teeth but they just aren't long enough to be extended down enough to be really useful.

Any great ideas? I'd survive doing it all by hand, but I'd sure rather at least get the digging done by tractor.

A plow with multiple passes?

For a narrow trench for your bulbs I would use a sub-soiler attachment.

Going to go a little outside of the box here.

Could you use some C-clamps or something and strap some 2x6's sticking out the end of the bottom plate of the bucket on the FEL (kind of like an overgrown tooth bar). Curl the bucket into the dump position and drive through the area with the wood "teeth" penetrating to the desired depth. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like the general concept. I'm going to think on it some. I have some left-over 4x4 bits that maybe I could clamp to the inside of the scraper. I guess I'll load up the clamps, scrap lumber and see what I can throw together. I had good weather to do it, but had to miss out due to job and errands /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm hoping I get at least one warm & dryish day this weekend.

I planted 1/2 acre of various bulbs and got nothing!!

I have found out no matter how often you hoe and ferterlize a crop of bulbs, there are no guarantees they'll grow.

Now, I'm gonna have to dig them all up since I'm afraid the glass will break and cut someone's foot. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Did you plant them base down though? If they do come up the flowers can be quite bright /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You can buy a metal auger bit specifically designed for planting bulbs that will fit in a drill. Mine came from Harbor Freight tools and I use it in my 1/2" drill. For the size plot you are describing, that would be my approach.

I have one of those, but for as many as I'd need to do, I'd probably need to use a corded drill which means dragging the generator out. It isn't out of the question, but I think I'll try a way that makes furrows first. I may be doubling the number of bulbs if I can get these things in the ground.

Did you plant 75 or 100 watt bulbs?
