Metal Post Driver

My dad is using a Metal Post Driver that hooks up to the three point and hydraulics. It is really heavy duty and drives a 4 inch steel post about 4 inches everytime it comes down.

Has anyone seen a driver like this that works on T posts. I will set the big posts in concrete if it costs more to drive them. Any ideas what an accessory like this costs or who makes them?

Darn good tool, when setting many post's and the money is there. My nieghbor has the same that swings from the loader bucket. Mounted to 50HP Kubota. Drives a railroad tie like John Henry. Don't know the cost, will ask him. I seem to remember near $3000
Ask your Father. Can you make a metal cap that fits driver to T' post??? Short 4" pipe to go over the T' post???
Like, will the metal hand type fit the 3 point driver???

Wen, Danuser makes them, but I found out real quick they were out of my price range. But it sounds like it's the same thing your dad has, but with an adapter for the t-posts. I still have their literature, but forgot exactly what the price was. Try http://www.danuser.com

Hey Wen ..for a dumb kiwi could ya tell me what a T post iswe have a post here thats more of a Y than a T about 6foot long and (if you start at the bottom of the Y)1 1/2 by 1 by 1 (inchs)is that the kind of thing ya talking about driving??if it is kind of like that i's say it's faster driving them by hand (not with a hammer but a hand driver)we drive all our wooden posts with a big driver (400Lb hammer on it)and you could drive our Y posts with that by putting a 3-3 1/2 inch pipe about 4 foot long over top with a 5 inch X 1 inch plate welded on top ,i'd also make a frame out of 1 inch angle (like a pic frame)so i could put a bit of 2 inch thick wood on top(tight fitting!!) just to cut down the steel on steel noise .

That is exactly what he did. He welded a pipe that fit over the T post and then a plate and a pipe to adapt it to the driver. He says it really works well. I sure hope when I am 85, I will still be driving T posts like he is doing every day! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks Bird. I found the Danuser site, but no data, just a description. "Under normal ground conditions, only a few strokes of the 235 lb. weight sets wood or steel posts firmly - and average size posts do not require pointing. Unit can be adjusted for driving posts perpendicularly on hillsides and in uneven ground. One PTO driven and two hydraulic models to choose from."

I probably couldn't afford it, but I believe I could get my money back pretty quick with the amount of fencing that is going on around my area. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

In California, I had a KIWI tree. They were nearly as good as Oranges.

T Posts are sold here as 1.25 #/ft and 1.33 #/ft and sound similar to identical to the Y post you are describing. They are made for barbed wire, but used for most Agricultural type fences here. Describe the 400 pound driver a little clearer to me. Is this a 390# man with a 10# sledge or a tractor implement. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

The only driver I own is a piece of 4 inch pipe welded to some 1 in pipe handles. You pick it up and slam it down to drive the post a few inches at a time. Tried driving them with the loader just pushing them in the ground. Works pretty good on sand, but not to well on rocky soil.

There should be a cheap way to drive T posts with less effort than the manual drivers! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

i have a old one. It has a frame tha tfits on the 3pt. A weighted box rides on rails attached to the 3pt frame. A hydraulic cylinder is used to lift the weighted box, and then to release a trip lever which drops the box on the t-post. The box itself has a door which you put the t-post in; it holds it in line with the box.

I have had it for a year, but never got hydraulics. Now I have hydraulics sitting in the shop, but have not had time to mount them( adding tip/tilt to my B8200)

The concept looks correct. But, I have no data yet...

I also saw a hydraulic operated hammer that they use on a backhoe or loader to bust rock. I bet that is another attachment that I would like to have and can't afford. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Wen, I got Danuser to mail me their literature on the different models (no prices included), then I talked to my dealer, and now I'd be afraid to say anything about the price because I've forgotten, but it was well up there in the thousands of dollars; high enough to make me forget it./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
