Hi,
I ran over a quality piece of nylon string yesterday and it promptly wraped around my finish mower shaft and melted. So, I tried to remove the blade but I don't know which way to turn it. Anyone know? What is the proceedure for blade removal? It is a Mid-West 5' finish mower. I didn't get a manual from the dealer or Mid West.
thanks, BrettW

Brett most of the blade bolts on finish mowers are left hand thread to the best of my knowledge. We use an impact wrench to take the bolts off from time to time to sharpen the blades.

Make sure that you block the deck up before you get under it for maintenance or you might make the safety forum. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

And I thought most were right hand threads, with just some having left hand threads. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif In fact, I've never owned or removed the blades from one that wasn't right hand threads.

Here is the link to the Midwest Parts manual on line. I took a quick look and it doesn not mention thread direction which leads me to believe it would be normal right hand thread. It calls out the bolt in the parts list in a normal fashion as well.

I am not sure this is your model, but since they only had one manual for finish mowers I think it probably applies.

Midwest Series 30 Finish Mower Manual

So normal thread = right tightens, correct?

Yes = clockwise = right tighten = normal /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

thanks,
I'll try it with normal thread. How do you stop the blades from turning when you try and take off the bolts? a 2x4?

With an impact wrench, you don't have to worry about it, but with a manual wrench, yep, a wooden block.

I always use the rule of thumb that if it discharges on the left hand side it is left hand thread and if it discharges to the right side, it is right hand thread.

Works for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tom, that certainly sounds logical to me, but I can't recall ever seeing one that discharged on the left side. I assume that such exist and you have seen them.
