Looking for pallet forks and a wood chipper. Loader capacity will be 2800lbs, so I believe a 2000 lb forks will be sufficient. I really don't want to do $800+ on the pallet forks. A 6" PTO wood chipper is desired. Any help is appreciated!

2000# pallet forks will probably be plenty simply becuase you won't have 2800# of capacity when it is all said and done. Capacity is measured in several places on a front end loader, the highest capacity is measured at the pivot point, the lowest at the bucket lip, and often there is a 3rd rating that is at the center of the bucket that falls somewhere in between the other two ratings. All that said, if your loader capacity is 2800# at the bucket lip, you probably will have about 2400# capacity with forks (assuming the bucket is removed and replaced with forks). But if your loader is rated at 2800# at the pivot point, you probably would have about 2000# capacity on the forks.

Also understand the the capacity of loaders includes the weight of the bucket (and in this case the weight of the forks/fork assembly) so you have to deduct the actual weight of the forks/fork assembly from the capacity to detmine the load capacity.

I can't help you with the chipper.

I guess with the forks a lot depends on the machine. I went with the Deere Worksite Pro units for their skid steer.

I went with a Valby chipper and it flat out kicks ****. I've done work for others (favors) and they cannot believe what a best it is. Very maneuverable in the woods too.

Beware though, when buying my philosophy is often modeled after: "Have you ever been disappointed when you bought the best" rather than shopping for price.

I like your philosophy...mine is more or less the same: you only regret the expensive price for a short while, your regret poor quality every time you use it for the rest of the time you own it.

My approach is "buy the best you can afford."

As far as forks, I have the light duty Payne forks and am very pleased with them. They handle everything that my FEL can handle, are rated for about 800# but have unloaded pallets with 1000# without difficulty. Sounds like you might want to go to the "medium" duty forks.

I researched all of the PTO driven chippers and chipper/shredders last summer. Because I wanted shredding capability as well, I bought the Vandermolen Wood Pro. It does a **** of a good job chipping and is only slightly less effective on soft vegetation shredding. It also has a hopper that slopes downwards and makes feeding very easy even without power feed. I posted a review last summer which a search will turn up.

Hope this helps.

"It's unwise to pay too much, but, it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought is incapable of doing what it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can't be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that you will have to pay enough for something better.

There is hardly anything in the world that someone can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper--- and people who consider price alone are this man's prey."
