I have a Landpride 25-60 tiller that started leaking gear/chainbox oil at the tiller shaft seal. I brought the seal and was going to replace it but found at partial disassembly the I didn't have the tools (gear puller, chain hoist) to finish the job. I put the gear/chain case back on and pumped about 5 grease gun cartrages until it would not take any more. I used it for a couple of seasons with no obvios problem. At the beginning of the season this Spring I thought I better check it and was able to pump another 5 or 6 grease gun cartrages in with no problem. That kind of worried me, thinking that all that grease could be pushed off to the sides, not doing much lubricating. Therefore I poured ( more like coaxed) a quart of STP in the case after poking around with a long screwdriver to make a channel thru the grease. Mr-fixit, in answering a post in "Grey Market Tractors" http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=greym&Number=37058&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5 re this practice said it will eventully fail ( "pay me now or pay me later").{note the period MChalkley/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif} I did the same to a gearbox on a rear Lucknow snowblower that leaked around stripped threads on the filler plug 4-5 years ago and it is still going. I coaxed a couple of ounces of STP into that gearbox also yesterday since it seemed a good idea. The grease that has been in there was like bloby molasses. That maybe a different deal though compared to the Landpride since the filler plug is up on the side whereas the the Landpride leak is 3 to 4 inches from the bottom of the chain case at the tine shaft.
At any rate, is there any insight/experience out there on such salvage manuevers. Obviously a steering gearbox and a tiller gear box have different orders of stress.

This is not an answer to your question, but it brings up another. I also have a 2560 cutter. When I first got it I checked the gearbox oil. When I unscrewed the bolt in the fill hole, it "burped". The fill hole plug had a sheet metal cap on it, I thought it covered a breather hole. IF the gearbox builds pressure, would that contribute to blowing out the seal?

Your correct, Every gear box needs a pressure stabiliziing vent port. The ever changing temperature expands and contracts everything, air, oil grease.
Most often there is attached instructions to remove a plug after shipping.
The vent plug is there to prevent leakage during shipping.
Sealed vent hole will rupture seals.
Opening vent holes will also reduce already leaking seals.
This is one time it is good to VENT your hot gases.

Ray-
If it's leaking badly enough that you're afraid of running it dry, it needs to be fixed. If it's just a matter of topping it off once a year, I'd run it (with oil). The problem with grease is that it doesn't flow into the places where it is needed, such as the pins that the side plates and rollers run on, and the top bearing. Also it is not necessary to always have the oil right at the full mark- as long as the chain is running in oil on the lower sprocket, you're ok.

I thought about doing that to a rake the I couldn't stop from leaking. After assessing what had to be done with the rake over the next 20 years and the current condition and parts cost I decided to keep it as backup and purchase a new one almost excatly like the 35 year old. When it arrived the gear box was filled with white grease. Maybe I should have crippled through a few more years and kept pumping along. I would check with the dealer and find out the equip. current setup in regards to lubrication.
