I thought a while back I ran across a small baler that would work behind a 20 to 30 hp tractor but now I can not find it. Was I dreaming or is there such an animal.

Seams like I've seen it myself, I know that it is made in Canada can't remember the brand, and it is designed for compact tractors. Price for the thing was BIG BUCKS. I remember thinking that I could get a good used full size tractor and decent full size bailer for that price and still put money back in my pocket. Don't know if this is the one you were looking at, but at that price I moved on to something more realistic.

You should be able to find an older used baler that would work for you. 40 years ago I had several Uncles who farmed and they baled with 8N's. Don't know if you could find anything new that would fit your needs.

Several of the older balers would operate with relatively little power input. I've got an old 273 New Holland that I've baled straw with, behind a 32 HP (on a GOOD day) Massey Ferguson 50. Not even a good load on the old tractor.

I've heard "rumblings" that several manufacturers are planning on introducing small square balers, and even a small round baler for the compact market.

There were some pictures of one in that long thread about two wheelers. Think one worked on a BCS.

Do a search for "two wheel" or "BCS" or "Gravely".

Would you believe there once were flail mowers made for 12 hp Gravelys?

deere755,

Get your checkbook ready, like Doxhound said, they are pricey.

<font color="green">Agriquip</font>

<font color="orange">Abbriata</font>

<font color="blue">Gallignani</font>

<font color="red">Cicoria</font>

And, last but not least, this is a link that you can find all those brands and a way to absolutely waste a rainy afternoon:

<font color="magenta">Worldwide Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Directory</font>

Here's another directory that can help sift through those hard-to-find brands:
<font color="brown">Italian Farm Machinery</font>

If you notice, most, if not all of those brands are Italian made.

Hope this helps.

You could get yourself an antique, that is what we did.

We run a JD 14T ( 1950's vintage ) behind a NH TC 30 with no problems at all.

In addition, the Wolagri company makes a line of small mini round balers and medium size round balers. We use a R500 for haylage and it works great. Tough little bugger and it just keeps rolling those bales! Available through Ferrari Tractor CIE in Gridley CA.
Also, the Japanese round baler is the Star brand. I seem to remember a dealer in Georgia. Time for a search engine!
They may be thought of as "expensive" but they are well engineered and parts are available when you need them.
Lots of small farms in Europe and England use them so they are popular and will get more so as the small farm movement grows in the U.S.
Good luck!
