I have been looking at a few used harrows this week and there are a few chain harrows and toothed harrows around. What would be the most popular? My main use is to drag through a cattle pasture. Any recommendations would be apreciated. Steve

Depends on what you want to do?

Knock down 'cow pies'? Then the chain may not do, but the toothed would do, if you angle the teeth back near to flat with the drag.
Seems the toothed would be more flexible for more uses, as the teeth angle. The chain seems would do good for covering seed just sown on worked ground.

I have an 8x8 tooth harrow with which I maintain my hillside pastures and farm roads. I've always considered tooth harrows to be limited to working in previously tilled soil. Don't see where one could possibly do the things I do with my chain harrow

We harrowed a small pasture for years with an old set of diamond (tooth) harrows. When we moved to a larger property (70 acres of harrowing pasture and hay land), I got so tired of the old diamond harrows breaking, that I replaced them with a set of 13 ft Tram-Flex chain harrows. See http://www.tramsales.com/tramstory.php I wish that I had bought them years ago, as the harrow is a joy to use on pasture and hay land compared to the bouncy old diamond harrows (and no more stopping to fix broken harrows).

The 13 ft harrows were CAN$1000 last year before steel went up and my 35 hp tractor pulls them easily enough on our rolling land. For knocking down mole hills, spreading manure and leveling, the chain harrow is vastly superior to the diamond harrows we used in the past.

If you can find one, the 5/8" diameter chain harrow is a much stronger product than some of the lighter ones available.
