My wife and I have been interested in buying a commercial grade chipper to make use of all our wooded property and brush; however, the stand-alone's are quite expensive.

I came across a Dr. Chipper 3-pt hitch chipper in a hunting magazine, and was wondering if anybody has any sense of these and their value? Or any other brand of chipper to run off the back of the tractor. Price ranged between $1500 and $3000 depending on the model.

I own a Deere 790 MFWD.

Thanks.

Our local JD dealer here in Charlottesville has 3 pt MacKissic shredder/chippers for a little less than $1700. They appear to be very much like the one on my 8 hp Troy Bilt. They're probably designed for the SCUT and CUT tractors, probably good for around 30 hp.

The latest DR catalog pictures of the DR chippers look like they're only a chipper, not really a hopper to just put brush into.

Others on TBN have talked about getting a Chinese Jinma? Think that's it. Might look it up. Think they mentioned they't $1500.

I personally think the DR is overpriced. Further, it is a chipper only, no shredder. The hp requirements seem to be overstated contrasted to most all other manufacturers for the same size. A MacKissic is what I plan eventually to get.

Thanks for the advice. I may check with my dealer and see what he recommends.

I had someone suggest the woods 3 point, have yet to see it in person and haven't priced it yet but it looks nice.

I have had chinese Jimna chipper for two years now. I cut fire wood for myself - about 3 cords a year- very pleased with the chipper. I use it on a 25 horse power tractor, and the chipper is rated up to 6 inch logs, but, depending on soft or hard wood, I wouldn't recommend going much more than two or three inch logs/brush. You have to keep in mind the tractor's internal gearing. It could be easily abused. But cutting fire wood, we burn anything 2 inches or bigger. One thing to keep in mind is the size of the intake chute - it may be a two inch limb with lots of extra branches on it, so the bigger the intake chute with pull feed roller is a must. This isn't a commercial grade - but we've been very pleased with the performance. Yugo

I tried out a Woods 5000 series, and found the chipper section to leave a lot to be desired. The Shredder section was awesome. For around $2000, I didn't think the problem with the chipper was worth it.

I have a 6" capacity Chinese wood chipper,It connects to the tractor easy and fast.when running 540 rpm it is as smooth as a babys butt, it chips like there's no tomorrow,I have cleared hundreds of pine, birch, maple,& scrub trees and limbs as big as 6"(sometimes a bit bigger) made a stand to lower it on when not in use and I can roll it into a corner of the garage. you can find them for about 1500.00 bucks new. Now this isn't a rinky dink Chipper, It's 800+ lbs.has a infeed drive roller and large hopper, I'm in upstate New York your welcome to come see it. I highly reccomend them. I have pictures if wanted /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Valby chippers yet. If you are looking for commercial grade, they make a couple of great units. They aren't cheap, though. I priced the CH 140 model a couple of years ago, and it was $3200 with manual feed. I'm sure it's more now, and the hydraulic feed system pushes the price way up. My neighbor has access to a Valby CH 160 with hydraulic feed that I've used a couple of times -- it works great!
