Laid down 2-4D with boom sprayer Sat. am over the yard. Hot windless morning. Kept the pets off of the yard for a few hours until it was good and dry. Beagle has been having eye and respiratory problems since this general time period. Any chance of weed spray poisoning or irritation? Taking to Vet this am, any similar experiences out there or is it something else?

A good chance based on the actions of the dog. I think after spraying any chemical you should not let anyone on for over 24 hours. And you dog may be have had a re-action that others would not have had.

Technically you should follow the REI restrictions on the label for your pets as well as you. Realistically I spray around my animals all the time with zero problems. I spray 2,4-Din my backyard with the dog back there. Have done so for years and the dog is doing fine and has not grown a second head or anything.

I try to keep my dogs off the stuff for 24 hours and generally hose of their paws frequently until there has been some rain or at least a few days.

Too much of anything isn't good for you or your pets.

Your dog may also have some form of allergy.

"TOXICOLOGICAL EFFECTS
ACUTE TOXICITY
While the LD50 of 2,4-D suggests that it is only moderately toxic, the product carries the DANGER signal word on the label indicating that it is highly toxic. This is because 2,4-D has produced serious eye and skin irritation among agricultural workers (15,16).
The oral LD50 of 2,4-D in the rat ranges from 375 to 666 mg/kg; 370 mg/kg in the mouse; and less than 320 to 1,000 mg/kg in the guinea pig. The rat and rabbit have dermal LD50 values of 1,500 mg/kg and 1,400 mg/kg, respectively. In humans, prolonged breathing of 2,4-D causes coughing, burning, dizziness, and temporary loss of muscle coordination.

Symptoms of poisoning can be fatigue and weakness with perhaps nausea. On rare occasions there can be inflammation of the nerve endings with muscular effects following high levels of exposure (6). Symptoms vary with the different commercial products because of the specific amounts and types of additives such as surfactants and solvents. "

For those interested, turns out the beagle was allergic to a sulphur based antibiotic he was taking (for a small lump in the throat) which caused the symptoms of itching, coughing, weeping eyes, etc. Typical beagle stuff. $278 dollars later (many tests) and will be treating the dog to get his dry eyes back to normal. Drug company said very unusual, I said just my luck. Vet said 2-4D no problem after completely dry.
