Planning to get a Kioti LB1914. Would like to get a PTO Chipper/Shredder. Would I be better off getting a standalone self powered one? Doesn't seem to be much difference in price. Thoughts?

I got a pto-driven C/S. One less engine to maintain and, w/24 PTO hp driving it, I can handle material a lot quicker. My memory is that for the same power, you'd pay more for a stand alone, but I could be wrong.

If you do a search on "chipper/shredder" you'll turn up a lot of info and comments on specific brands, including an earlier post w/pictures of mine. There are several good mfrs, including Valvy, Salsco and what I bought, Vandermolen. If you want shredding as well as chipping ability, read the product info carefully; not all chippers can shred.

Hope this helps.

I think a good standalone is about half the Hp of a 3 pt model at the same price. This seems to be the case for 8hp Troy Bilt vs. a 3 pt MacKissic or Jimna to go on my 18.5 hp JD 4010.

Think you'll get more capability at same price with a 3 pt and won't have to maintain another engine.

I've got a JD 2210 and also am looking at a PTO chipper shredder. I've been concentrating on the DR top chute, the Woods 5000, Bearcat 70554, and MacKissic 10 HP models. All Seem to be adequate for my needs but I'm leaning to either the Woods or Bearcat Model. Anyone out there know a good price for these last two machines?

TIA!

I don't have a price for either, but I think Woods and Bearcat are the same units... I know the bigger ones are...

Thanks for the suggestions. I did take a look at them.

I decided to go with the Mackissic TPH122 which is the smaller of that company's 2 pto model chipper shredders. Its rated at a minimum of 10HP but as I found out in the shopping process, when you buy a PTO chipper, you need to be sure you use the right HP rating for your tractor in making your buy decision. I was told that its the HP at the "yoke" that counts...not the engine HP. The JD 2210 has a 23 HP engine but is apparently rated at 17.7 HP at the yoke (which I take it is the HP at the point you connect the chipper to your PTO). Anyway, the next biggest Mackissic unit (TPH183) was rated at 16 to 50 HP. And while I have 17.5 HP available at the PTO, it was suggested to me that the "recovery" time (I.e., the time it takes for the chipper's fly wheel to get back to full speed after handling larger branches) will lag noticeably with only 1.5 HP above the bare minimum needed to operate the machine. That could get frustrating when undertaking larger jobs.

So, I downsized to the smaller model since I figured its 3.5 inch rated capacity was enough for most of what I will need to do anyway and the smaller unit was about $1000 cheaper to boot.

By the way, I also was told in this process that Mackissic makes the DR line of chippers that DR Power Equipment sells. I think MacKissic's own brand though is more machine for the money.

I also looked at the Chinese chippers available here now and as you might expect, they seem like alot of machine for the money. But I'm still not ready to seriously consider buying Chinese made tractors or implements until they become more mainstream in the U.S. and I can get comfortable with product quality, parts availability, warranty policies and practices, etc.

Thanks Again though for taking the time to add to my options!

That sounds like a nice setup for the money. Love to hear your thoughts on the chipper after it gets some use!

I bought a used one off Ebay a while ago. I'm waiting for an owners manual right now since I can't figure out how to replace the hammers and they were abused -- one is broken.

Things I've figured out are:

As the chipper blade gets dull, it doesn't self feed in the chipper as well. I take this as an indicator that the blade is dull rather than a design problem.

It's catagory 0 hitch based which means that you can't use a quick hitch -- bummer. Anyone know of a cat 0 to cat 1 conversion technique (for width that is, I don't mean just bushings)

It suck things into the shredder hopper so fast that you can get whipped by the branches if you're not carefull.

The chipper blade is put on with loctite. I guess I'll have to use a propane torch to get it off to sharpen it. I'm not exactly sure how to do this, so I'm hoping the manual will detail it.

Operates very smooth and even with a dull blade is very happy eating 3" branches and makes very nice sized ships with the standard screen.

well if you have any trouble getting that manual, send me a note here and I'll make a copy for you when the machine is delivered (hopefully this week).

By the way, have you just let the chips fall to the ground where you have to scoop them up or have you come up with a way to catch them for easy transport around the yard?
