4\' Rotary Cutters

Okay I'm really getting serious. Been checking around the area and there are several brands (KingKutter, Southern, Fred Cain, etc) available but the Bush Hog is about $150 more. They all seem to be in the $500 price range with the Bush Hog at $650. Is the Bush Hog worth the $150 difference?

Hard to say. May depend on how you intend to use it. I had a 4' Bush Hog and now have a 5' Howse. The Bush Hog is definitely better quality and comes with a much better manual. And the only time I had occasion to contact the company, I got friendly folks on the telephone and promptly got what I needed (haven't had occasion to try to contact the Howse manufacturer). In my case, I traded up in size and down in quality, but think the Howse is adequate for the work I do. If the difference in price had been $150, I'd have probably stayed with Bush Hog, but my price differential was $300, so I went with the cheaper one.

I got me a rotary cutter today. $595 for a Fred Cain Agri-Cutter AC-104. The dealer sells it and Bush Hog and says the Fred Cain are better than the Bush Hog brands. Same blades, gear box and the Fred Cain model are better built.
Hopefully this evening I'll have time to drop my MMM and see how she cuts the big weeds.

If it's as good as, or better than, a Bush Hog, that's certainly a good price. I'm just not familiar with that brand at all.

I recently bought a B7500 HST. I have been looking at 4' rotary cutters also. I really like the Woods Brush Bull BB48, does anyone have any experience with this Woods product. Will the B7500 run a 4' rotary cutter?

The B-7500 will run a four foot brush hog. Do not have any experience with the Woods brush hog, I am very impressed with there finish mowers, I bought a Howse less money, less quality, but handles my needs well.

I have a 4ft. kingkutter and would not trade it for any other kind of rotary cutter.

I have a 4' Woods XT148 on my B7500. It works very well.

Howdy!

I've got a 5ft Fred Cain that is built like a tank. Let's just say that it's eaten a few rocks I couldn't see in the tall weeds. I've got two nice dents in the deck from that. =]

Only problem with them is that they can be ugly. I've seen some with welds that looked like Ray Charles was behind the torch. Likewise with the paint. Mine has a bunch of paint runs from where it was stood on end after painting.

With that said, my dealer has been selling them for years and has yet to get into the gearbox on one. He sharpens blades, and that's about all the maintenance he ever does on them. Basically, they're ugly but tough as nails.

Like some of the other posters here, I had never heard of Fred Cain until I stopped at a dealer to look at a used L2250. I decided to buy the tractor, and since I was trading my larger rig in and needed a mower to fit the Kubota, I decided to try the Fred Cain. It's a model 205, five foot with 1/8" deck/sides, 1/4"x 3" blades, and shear pin. It's as heavy as my little tractor needs to handle. I'm very pleased with the cut as I use it to mow open areas on the place and want them looking as nice as possible.

The gearbox was moaning louder than I expected. When I complained to the dealer, he said they had never had any problems with them. He contacted Fred Cain, and they promptly sent a new gearbox which is just fine. Comparing the original noisy one to the new one, the original had considerably more backlash in the gears. I've had it more than a year, and am very pleased with it.
