Some augers do better than others with rock, but a phd is not designed to drill through a layer rock. Most augers will simply sit and spin when they hit rock because they do not have downforce. Rocks that can fit between the flutes can be brought up, but going through a layer of rock? Not usually.

I suggest giving Danuser a call and tell them what you're running into and see what they recommend. There are hydraulic models that fit on a FEL, allowing you to use the FEL to apply downforce. There are also models that fit on a Bobcat.

It would be a bit of a hassle, but if the slate isn't too thick, you could use a tunneling bar to break it up

Whether or not the digger will penetrate slate depends upon the point on the auger.
The Pengo Agressor Point on my 9" auger might be able to do it.

Best regards, Dawson

I have a BX2200 and a Green PHD and auger from Northern. It digs in my clay when slightly damp. Below my clay, I have a water impermeable silica cemented hardpan called durapan. It is almost as strong as concrete. The PHD just spins around when it gets down to this stuff. A neighbor has a Bobcat with downpressure and a carbide fishtail auger bit which cuts the stuff easily.

TBN member ultrarunner, who lives in the Oakland Hills where there is serpentine rock, has a BX23 with a Land Pride PHD. The unit has a downpressure kit and I believe a carbide fishtail auger bit. He paid $1800 for the unit.
