Looking over the Howse rough cut mower in the Northern Tool and noticed it doesnt have much play in the top link (it has an oblong hole the top link to slide it) if you drive through a dip... Has anyone had problems with this?

Can you buy a adjustable chain top link?? or could you use a standard top link and just tighten in down and add a chain link??

I have a Howse rough cut mower that has the slot for the top link to float in. I set the mower at the height I wont to cut and adjust the top link so the pin is in the center [equall slot on each side of pin]. That allows the tail wheel to follow the ground surface. No, it has never gave me any problems. If you wanted to add more float???....you could put a chain there.

I own a 4ft Howse Brush hog and it has been one tough piece of equipment. The top link has never posed a problem for me. Don't be scared of Howse equipment they get flamed alot here but as I said my personal experience has been nothing but good.

My 10' howse mower also has the slot. I adjust it so that when it is level it is in the middle.

In a few cases of big slope, the toplink will bottom.. but the mower can then simply lift the lift arms a tad.. like if the tractor goes up a hill...

So.. no problems encountered.

I'd like to also add that this setup works way better that the "U" shaped piece that King Kutter uses.. it flops around and can get hung in an odd position that makes the cutter not have as much play as it should.
