Got a question. How much, on an average, should I pay for a used chisel plow? I've got a 1978, 4630 JD with 155 HP. Engine runs great. Hydraulics are very decent. I hope I have given decent info.

I recently bought a 7 shank chisel plow for $350.00. Since about all sizable farmers have gone no till, used chisel's have gone way down in price. You need a fairly large tractor, at least 10HP per shank, to adequately pull one. It's not something the average utility tractor owner wants or needs and the compacts aren't big enough to operate one. If you'll look around you should find one pretty cheap.

When I had a 40HP Ford, I bought a 12 shank chisel (pull type) for $40 at auction. Before the sale was over, a guy bought the two extensions on the ends from me for $20. Cut it up with the torch and built a 3 pt, six shank chisel and sold the rest for scrap (about $10).

If you got the skills or a buddy with metal tools, don't be afraid to buy an old bigger one and cut it down. For me it was dirt cheap!
