Questions about front blades for those who used em

Couple of questions if I may,
Is it better to have the blade further out front or close in?
How much below ground level should it be able to go?

The closer to the center of the tractor a blade or bucket is, the less problem with "bump amplification". In other words, the blade should be tucked in as close to the front wheels as possible.

It won't be necessary to get the blade much more than 6" or so deep. You won't be able to push that much dirt with rubber tires anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A bit off topic here but if you are looking for a blade for road grading/leveling, a belly mount blade is hard to beat. Makes the surface real smooth real fast /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The bigger tractor blades are often mounted out front. Most have spring loadings to release the blade some if it hits something. With it mounted so far out front, it's difficult to see out there really well or to gauge how close you are to avoid hitting things sometimes.

The one on my Gravely is mounted very close in, right on the end of the front PTO (but doesn't work anything on the plow, of course). It doesn't have any spring loading device as you can clearly see and judge how close you are to things. It's also strong enough and the tractor light enough that no damage is done if you do happen to hit something. The one on the Gravely won't swing down very low. The tractor doesn't have the weight nor the traction to push too much other than snow with it.

Slamfire, I put it to go 4 inch underground, but of course as it digs in and pushes the dirt away it should be able to go in forther. As you sat, too much dirt and iim gunna be spinning.

Ben, not enough room to put in under the belly, its only a tiddler tractor. I agree that would be the best place though, except for pushing sand off a pile.
