Can\'t lock tiller driveshaft to PTO

I recently bought a JD 2210 with a JD 647 PTO tiller. I cannot get the collar on the driveshaft to lock in place when connecting it to the PTO. Is there a trick to locking it?

I start by connecting the TPH arms, then telescope the driveshaft to the PTO on the back of my tractor. I can get the connector to slip about 1" or 1.5" onto the PTO shaft, but it does not lock, and I can pull it right off again. I've tried manipulating the callar on the driveshaft. Am I missing a step?

Thanks in advance!

It's probably just not sliping onto the splined shaft enough. You might want to try cleaning up the male splines alittle, and also look inside the female on the driveshaft. You have to get the depth right before the pin will 'lock' into the grove on the PTO output shaft. It may have not been installed lately, and probably just cruded up. Make sure it is locked before you use it though. And be carefull around the PTO. We had a machine repairman at work years ago find what was left of his son floping around the shaft. The figured he had gotten his T-shirt caught in it, and it just flopped him around and gutted him. Really felt sorry for the man, just be carefull.

Yes there is a trick!

There are a couple different types of locks.

Common lock #1 = a push button. You may find a small steel button near the end of the coupler, if so, PUSH THAT BUTTON WHILE YOU SLIDE the implement's PTO driveshaft onto the tractor's PTO shaft.

Common lock #2 = a pull or twist collar. If you don't see a button, then you may have a pull or twist type collar. Pull collars are more common. With a pull collar there is a ring around the end of the driveshaft where it connects to the tractors PTO shaft. Pull the ring toward the IMPLEMENT while pushing it onto the tractor's PTO shaft.

Sometimes it can be a bit of a pain and take a bit of coordination, but once you figure out how to get the locking mechanism locked onto the PTO shaft, it will get easier. BTW, to take it back off the tractor, you have to reverse the process because the locking pin/collar will hold it on the tractor and prevent you from taking it off unless you are holding the button or pulling on the collar.

Sounds like you are not getting the collar all the on to the rear of the PTO shaft. Try greasing the shaft a little.

Re: Can\'t lock tiller driveshaft to PTO

I think you need to look at the locking mechanism on the end of the driveshaft. Figure out which type of locking mechanism it has and actuate it so you understand how it works. When you slip the shaft on you need to make sure the lock is open, once the bearing is sitting on the splines it will slide forword till it drops into the groove on the PTO shaft and will lock by itself. But it needs to be open to get it to slide on the shaft. Hope that helps.....

Re: Can\'t lock tiller driveshaft to PTO

One mistake I've made is to try to slide the plastic collar towards the tractor, instead of the metal collar towards the implement. I think I got that right. It came up enough that I even posted some pics in a thread I can't seem to find right now. I think my search techniques could use a tuneup.
