John,
I am going to get a box blade for my JD 4400,what is the most rugged built and capable and versatile one I can buy? I would appreciate any tips or info,I have about 2.5 to 3 miles miles of dirt roads in my woods I have had bulldozed and I want to smooth them up and keep them in good shape.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Frontier for JD, Made by Woods/Gannon

Hillbilly...

I have a 800 + lb. older Ford 8' rear blade that I use... you need to ask the King of Box Blades.... Mr. Bird...

However in my travels.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif, I thought the Woods/Gannon looked really beefed up... around $1000.+

You really need feedback from someone that has a 45+ drawbar hp tractor that tortures the unit, and has had it for a few years and find how they held up...

Box blade expert? Not hardly. Just because I tore up two cheap ones (5 footers) behind a B7100./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif So then I bought a Monroe Tufline (4 footer), and I think they're as good as you could find; one tough blade. However, when I went to the B2710 and back to a 5' blade, I bought a cheap Howse and think it's tough enough for my B2710 and the work I do, but certainly not Tufline quality. Some of the other guys know more about the Woods and Landpride line than I do and I'm sure they make some good ones, too.

I've got a 54" landpride that I use with a B2910. Works fine and hasn't broken or bent and I've snagged stuff that stopped the tractor dead in it's tracks. From what little comparative looking I've done, I think the Landpride gear is a bit heavier built than woods. Thinkgs like the thickness of metal in the hitch parts etc seem a bit bigger in the landpride. At the same time, I have a woods 48" field mower that I've pounded the $&*% out of and it just keeps on ticking so I can't say the apparant difference in construction matters.

I have a woods 65'' box scraper for my tc25d and it is quality at its finest I would tell anyone in the market to buy anything made by woods.Johns picture is worth a thousand words. Good luck.

Woods makes three lines of boxscrapers. In ascending order of strength, weight, features and price, they are: Woods, Gill and Gannon. (Woods bought Gill and Gannon.) The ugly green Frontier line is, I assume, the regular Woods line. I think the hydraulic Gannons would be right up there as the Cadillac of boxscrapers.

Hillbilly,

I can't talk authoritatively for the larger implements (I have a 4' Woods that use on my B7500), but I can vouch for the quality of the Woods boxblade. The picture that John supplied above is a virtual clone of my Woods boxblade (note the gussets in the corners, large square tube and cross-bracing. Although the name says "Frontier", I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that it's made by Woods, and is a good quality blade.

Although my boxblade is a Gearmore, I'll readily admit that Gannon is the best box blade made. If you like steel, then Gannon is for you. They do have economy models, but go for as much as you can. My Gearmore is about 1000lbs, hydraulic rippers and 72" wide. It was about $300 less then a comparable Gannon. The Frontier that John Miller shows looks like a well built box. There are alot of good manufactuers and I don't mean to slight any of them, just get a blade with beef, it helps in so many ways from ballast to ability, Rat...

<font color=blue>Glennmac</font color=blue>,
A neighbor of mine had an International (don't remember the model, but a large deisel 2wheel drive) with a heavy duty Gannon box blade that was bent every which way to Sunday!
So no matter the quality, you can still destroy them by improper usage! His box was good as counter balance for the FEL....that's about all.
