I have a Yanmar 2010, I know, it's GRAY market, but I love it. Anyway, I am looking for a used PTO generator that will work with my 2010. Any suggestions where to find a used generator? Jim Moody JasPMoody@centurytel.net

You can generally find them at farm auctions and implement dealers. What size are you looking for? Generally you can figure and 1kw per 2hp for your tractor.

I bought a used PTO driven ALTERNATOR at a farm auction several years ago. Dairy farms keep them on hand in case of power failures, in order to keep the milk tank (cooler) running. They sell high, but are worth having when the lights go out.

Not much in the practical sense.
About the same difference as a generator vs. alternator on a tractor.

Alternators spin the magnetic field generating an alternating current that doesn't have to go through brushes, makes them less maintainence intensive. The objection I have with pto alternators is that tractor governors are less sensiive to load changes. Electronic equipment and motors can be damaged by slow or fast frequency. The governors on alternators with their own motors are much better at maintiaing 60 cycles.
Generators, on the other hand, make direct current which, without a commutator, to convert it, can be converted to alternating current using electronics to maintain the proper frequency. Everything is a trade off. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

On a dc gen... the commie makes the current dc , by design.
Pto gens are low load when there is low demand.. just like an alternator...
The governor on my old 8n was responsive enough to keep 60 cycles on my pto gen and 120vac just power tools and lamps... Barely any noticeable drop in voltage at the meter.. and no freq drop when 10+ amp motors would kick on and off.
On the dig diesel tractor there was -0- difference from nearly full load.. to no load... just so much engine and flywheel powering it..

What size, something in the 7KW to 13KW area. Nothing too large. Simply want to be able to run well, some lights, and ventilation system. I live in the Memphis area and we are subject to ice storms and tornados. Several years back, an ice storm cause power outages for several weeks. I have the motor on my Yanmar 2010 tractor all I need is the PTO generator.
