Cant decide
Hi everyone, I am starting to gathering info on attachments in anticapation of A spring of 06 purchase. I have A 2.5 acre lot across the street thats an old grown over corn field. The ground is un-even and rutty. My plan is to clear the field of brush and either plow/disk or rototill/landscape rake. Then I will plant some type of grass that I will cut once per week. Ok here is the questions: 1)what methods and attachments would you guys use to work the land ? 2)What type of mower would you use to cut it? Flail or rear finish ? The lot runs along the road and I have neighbors on both ends.
my tractor will be A John Deere 4320 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd use a moldboard plow to turn it over in the fall, leaving all the trash to rot over the winter. In the spring the plowed ground will warm up and dry out faster than covered ground. Then I'd harrow it with one of the chain like types, several times to smooth it and kill emerging weeds. When it is as level as you want broadcast the seed. Clovers tend to stay short, so you could use a rotary cutter on the summer holidays Memorial Day, The 4th of July and Labor day. If you want a lawn ignore the clover and rotary cutter.

You could also plant the clover, wait until it matures, then turn it under with a plow to add a little nitrogen to the soil. Then disc, smooth the soil with a drag or spring harrow, plant your seed and depending on when you do the work, you could plant a Winter cover crop like oats along with your grass seed so your grass seed will get a head start on the weeds in the Spring. The oats will die out after one season leaving you with a healthy field of grass.

I would not waist money on buying all these attachments for a one time use on this.

What I have done is got a farmer to come in and plow the area then disk it.
This is a whole lot cheeper than buying all those implements
and a whole lot less work,
Saves a lot of wear and tear on your tractor too.

After that was done I drug it with a drag then planted the grass.

I did my whole 2.33 acres that way.

We had a garden later for a few years then gave it up and I had a farmer do the same thing with the 50 x 100 garden.

Worked great both times and cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars less than just one implement would have cost.
