Kubota L3600
I read where Bird said you could estimate the size of a mower by 1 foot for each five HP of the tractor. Does this hold true for a disc? I need to buy a disc to pull behind a Kubota L3600. Initially, I will use it on 5 acres of freshly cleared ground. The soil is sand. Also, what are the better brands for long term use.

Could be close.. but disc type, manufacturer specs, and geometry will introduce soo much variation that it is real hard to generalize.

Dual or single ganged? both could be 'x' feet.. but have a different load on the tractor.

Adjustable or fixed? The more angle.. the more agressige the disc will be.. thus more draft.. Notched vs smooth disc's... notched cut better...

heavy frame vs light frame... heavy frame simply weighs more.. liets disc 'bite' more.. thus more draft.

3pt vs drag.. Your tractors lift must be rated enough to lift a 3pt disc.. or your tractor needs remotes to run the lift wheels on a drag type.. etc.

Some disc's are specialized.. ( bog disc.. etc )

In general.. you want a disc that your tractor can lift, if 3pt.. and also drag comfortable.. weight vs tire traction is an issue.. meaning tire type ( ag vs turf ) will make a huge difference.. and features like a locking diff or 4wd will also make a big difference on pull , especially in wet or sandy areas.. or in turns ( 4wd makes for a much easier turn )

Thanks for the help. I do have 3pt hitch and 4 wheel drive. The tractor is rated at 39 hp. I will start looking at used and see what I can find. I need one soon and may have to buy a new one. I definitely need a heavy duty one that will last as I have more to disc as the land is cleared. I cannot find one made by Kubota or Bush Hog. What brands are good ones?

For newly cleared land that may have a few low stumps left in place, you might want to check out Wildlife Specialty's Brushmaster disc. It's a very heavy duty disc with "shock bearing risers" that allow it to go over stumps while keeping most of the discs cutting. Check it out.

For a more affordable option, check out King Kutter's line of box frame discs.

Disclaimer: I don't own a Brushmaster, but know a forestry/wildlife professional that does. He's gone through several different brands over the years and really likes the Brushmaster. I also do not own a King Kutter, but my sister is an accountant for them, and I worked in their Winfield, AL plant one summer. They make a decent product for the money. I'll probably be purchasing a box frame disc from them this fall.

Later,

BR

You are right, it looks good and it is expensive. I would have to rob a bank to pay for it but I cannot do that because I am on crutches and can't run away! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
