I just got a used Landpride finish mower, model FDR1572 recently.
I rebuilt the gearbox this week with new bearings and seals, too. I also bought a new little relief or vent valve located on top of the gearbox. But it lifts and gear oil oozes out of it getting my deck real messy after I run it for a little while.

I know that the gearbox needs to vent, but does everyone's gearbox relief lift (open)?

The relief valve is a 1/8" pipe thread, poppet type, with a small spring located on top of the gearbox.

I filled the gearbox with the mfg recommended type, grade and quantity, too.

Why does it spit oil out? Is this normal on this type of gearbox?

All my mower gear boxes have a fill plug on top, and a 'check/level' plug somewhere on the side.. usually to a point where the box is only half full.

When you say you filled yours up.. how far did you go?

Howdy Soundguy.
The Landpride manual specifies 1.2 oz of 85w-90 gear oil, so I measured it out and that is what I installed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have noticed that it only does this at the beginning of my mowing. After the gearbox is warmed up, then the oil burping stops. The condition existed before I rebuilt it too. I just thought the gearbox was getting too hot and that the hot gearbox was the main reason for the oil oozing out, but now Im not so sure...

Im wondering if I just made a little standpipe, for the venting device, maybe an inch or two high- just to get it up a little higher, then maybe that would help.

I'm gonna try that today and I'll let you know one way or the other.

thanks for you interest.
