I recently bought a tractor that came with a 5 foot finish mower. It says rm 38 ranger on the mower. It has been painted several times, so I can not read the other labels on it. I am unable to get parts for this because i cant figure out what company built it. I know it is not a woods. does anyone have any ideas???

Just a shot in the dark... I did a internet search and came up with this off of a site doing a Auction (here is the site if you would like to go there http://www.niteequip.com )

Dose the mower look something like that? IF you look real close at the pic, you can see the name, but I am not sure on the number. I am still trying to find who makes it, so far all points say "Ranger" makes it, but I can't find any info on that company making that mower.

I talked to woods dirrectly. They deny making a rm-38. I also went to the local woods dealer in Pa, they confirm that its not a woods. I was to the point of putting it out by the road ,"For sale cheap". I think someone here may recognize it . I have a pulley froze up on the deck. The left rear Castor wheel will not turn,[I am in the process of trying to clean it up and try it again].

deputy175,
I used to have one of these. The rear mower FM48, tiller RT38, and the rotary cutter RC42 were all made by Woods. When I tried to contact Woods about them , they referred me back to Yamaha and even denied they were made by them.

My FM48 looks almost exactly like your Ranger...right down to the twisted belt drive for the counter-clockwise-rotating blades. The stationary hub that the driveshaft plugs into looks just like a trailer hub and stub axle, but with the hub part bolted stationary to the back of the housing and the shaft drives the sheave that drives the belt.
Granted, this looks much older than mine was in 1988, but it's design is copied.
Perhaps Woods acquired another company that made these.
It does not surprise me that they did not own up to the mower. They did not own up to the stuff I had even though it was written in the Owner's Manual that Woods was the OEM supplier.
Good Luck with your delimma. The truth is out there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just talked to the guy who sold it to me. He swears its a woods. I had 2 farmers look at it and they say it sure looks like a woods. As far as the parts dealers they cant find rm 38 in their parts books. I suppose I could leave it somewhere where they fix mowers. It only needs the pulley for the left blade fixed[its seized up]. It has no belts. I was told to try running string around the pulleys to try and get the size.

Thanks to all that have posted. it really wont break my heart to tell the wife, well no parts are available, looks like I need a new one.

deputy175,

I know it will be an uphill battle, but, it may be manufactured before it became Woods.
Woods RM 59.... mower looks very similar. According to the PDF file, Woods - A division of Hesston. This may be Hesston era equipment i.e. before Woods was its own company. That is way before the Agco Corp got a hold of it.

Look through some of the PDF files on the Woods website. Something has to be pretty close.
