Max Engine HP

I am looking at RFM's and I noticed on the Landpride product they list a max horse power of 50 for the 84" FDR25 series. Is this a significant hard # or a guideline?, Do RFM's use shear pins? Whats the issue of too much power? If I remember correct I am about 70HP engine and 57 PTO is this going to be a problem? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Usually the implement companies give a gearbox horsepower range that is a minimum and a maximum. That rating is also usually not the engine HP; it is the PTO horsepower that they are referring to.

As to will it be a problem? That probably depends on a lot of factors, but if it is a new implement and you use it on a tractor that it is not rated for, and you break it, I'm willing to bet the warrenty will be voided.

The maximum HP is the implement's gear box rating. In other words, your tractor's PTO horsepower should not exceed that maximum rating.

Roy and the other Bob are correct.

However, you could still use the RFM, if you are careful. If you don't let the grass get too long or mow too fast, you won't overload the mower. Belt slippage and perhaps shear pins will afford you some protection if you accidentally push it too hard.

That said, it's a bit unusual to under rate your implements. Seems that just about all mismatches I read about are from implements being too big. I think you would be much happier and only a little poorer if you get an 8 footer.

I hope this is not a problem. I am pulling a Frontier 1072E with a 30 hp gearbox behind my 49 PTO HP 4520. So far, so good. I just take it easy. The tractor would pull the mower through grass that it could not mow at speeds that would or could burn out the gearbox. I have had no problems. I believe the key is increased PTO horsepower should not damage a mower gearbox unless subjected to heavy loading. A smaller tractor would have to slow to deal with this, while a more powerful tractor keeps putting the same force on the shaft and gearbox without bogging. The weak link in this case would be the gearbox and shaft on the deck. It does seem like this would be more of an issue with rotary cutters than with RFM's as overloading would be less likely seemingly with finish mowing, unless one tried to bush hog with the RFM, which I have seen.

Shouldn't be a problem if you use some common sense. Could be a problem for any kind of warranty work, if the implement gearbox breaks.
