hey all. i'm interested in moving pallets of firewood and wanted to make sure i have enough lifting capacity. i know there are a lot of variables, but does anyone have a ballpark number on how much a 4' x 4' x 4' pallet of green firewood (oak) weighs, including the hardwood pallet too? thanks.

Right close to 2700 lbs.......give or take a pound or two. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I palletize my split firewood and stop when I can just lift the pallet with my forks on the FEL. Pallets I use are near the standard 40" x 48" and I can stack wood about 5 courses high, which I estimate to be about 30 cubic feet, which is a fourth of a cord, or about 1265 pounds of green oak.
I stack my pallets two high and place covers over top to keep the rain water from running through the stack.

Of course the pallet of split oak is lighter when I pick it up with the 3pt forks in the winter two years later to move it into the garage.

I took the route of making my own pallets since my woodlot is 20 miles from my home. I settled on 38" x 38" by 36 high. That way they fit into my Ford Ranger bed. I take them over to the woodlot. Fill them with split wood and then unload them with the pallet forks. I've just started doing this and have only been working with seasoned wood thus far. The tractor picks them up okay. I'm splitting some wood here at the house (recently cut maple) and figure I'll load in a pallet and see how it goes.
