I am installing automatic horse waters in my paddocks does anyone know of a auger that goes to a depth of 7' deep? The company said I need to go 4' below the frost line to use the ground heat so the water lines will not freeze. Thanks Polaris

If you have an auger, and it is 3pt mounted it will probably dig 4'. For a few holes, I would dig the rest with a manual digger. If you have many holes, buy or make an auger extension. You can make one from a peice of pipe and drill a few holes. With a 3pt digger and depending on how high its lifts, you may be able to use a 2-3 foot extension (3' extension is questionable). I have a loader mounted hydraulic digger and with an extension, I have gone as deep as 8'. With an extension, you will need to frequently raise and lower the bit to clean out the dirt from the hole.

Puzzled here. Don't you need a trench 7' deep to run the water line to the Hydrants that you plan to put in these 7' deep holes? If so, can you just go to a backhoe or excavator that will trench to 7'? Or am I missing something (which is entirely possible).

I guess it all depends on how far you have to run the water-line from the well to the paddocks. There's a lot of economics that come into play here ... for example, 2000 feet of 7' deep slit trench won't be cheap! You may get a new well drilled for less if your water table isn't too low!

Wow, 7' sounds real deep to keep from freezing. Where are you located? Then again, I live in Georgia, so what do I know about that kind of cold.

I have put in some automatic waterers, but have opted for the electric heaters. The theory of the deep hole, as I understand it, is to use only the warm air coming up by convection to warm the waterer and keep the water from freezing. The pipes only need to be barely below the frost line. I went about a foot under the frost line, but haven't tried leaving the electric heaters off. I ran wires for those in with the water line, and have had no problem even with 1/2 mile of wire run.

Yes there are trucks that have a 7' and bigger augers on them. You just need to find them. Ask around from some contractors. They should be able to get you in touch with someone that has one.

beenthere, the seven foot deep hole is only under the waters to use the ground heat to keep the risers & waters from freezing, the water lines need to be just under the frost line. Thanks for everyones help
