I have just stumbled on what I think is a great deal /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif on a Befco 5ft tiller ($300). My question is, in comparison to the gear-drive tillers that I have seen, is the chain drive a "weak-link", or is the maintenance higher, or what? What should I be looking out for? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thanks,

If you bought what you want, and paid good price for it, don't bother about type of drive. For that size it doesn't matter, anyway.
Just keep it properly greased, and it will last.

Befco has a good reputation in my area for quality equipment. I wouldn't let the chain drive scare me away. Many King Kutter tillers are chain drive, and they have quite a fanbase on this site. If it's in good shape, $300 is a steal of a deal.

Thanks for replying back, to both,
I am glad to hear that, as I was sure that I had heard this brand mentioned as a contender before. I agree that for what I paid, I feel I can afford to experiment with the whole "rototilling" part of tractoring, and not feel too bad if I have to make a repair or two. I was especially intrigued with the ability to slide the tiller to the right, as per the literature, so I am anxious to get to it, and give it a try. I have noticed that JD seems to be a carrier of this brand, and that tines & whatnot seem to be available through them. That makes it all the better. I'll write back after I evaluate this unit. Thanks again,

Same type I own, which I bought second hand. It gets regular use and no problems yet. Befco will even send you the parts and owners manuals if you need them.
