Norse winch

Anyone know how to adjust the "idle" on a Norse winch, mine's a 2500 model? This one is probably a dozen years old but new to me. When the PTO is engaged you can just barely pull out cable and if you let go it runs right back in. I could use it like this but it's a pain to keep engaging/disengaging the PTO. A friend told me the big nut on the main spool shaft controls that tightness, but backing it off doesn't change things. I could post a picture if that helps anyone. Thanks, Jim

Yup the big nut is the clutch adjuster. If the clutch plates get off kilter they will always rub no matter what. Also check the rope is not always pulling tension on the clutch engaement.Might have to pull it aprt to check the aligment of the clutch plates.

If it's been sitting a while you may have dirt/rust issues causing the clutch assembly to stick. I had similar problems after purchasing my used Fransgard; I eventually took it all apart, had the drum turned, replaced the bearings, cleaned the clutch up, and wire brushed and lubed all other moving parts.

Thanks, guys. I guess I'll take it apart this winter after the fall wood cutting. I also noticed the plate (channel iron) at the nut end of the main shaft is bent a little toward the drum, as it might if the nut had been cranked too tight. Maybe straightening that out somehow might help a little. See the pic attached. Does anyone know if I can get a manual for this thing? I found the Labonville site which has a parts blowup, but no manual that I can see. I appreciate the help here, Jim

I think if you call Labonville they will be able to get you a manual. I have a winch that is at least 25 years old and the rumor is that it is a Norse. When I talked to Labonville they needed a model number in order to get a manual. My winch has been repainted and I could find no nameplate data. I would be interested in a picture of your winch. The picture you posted looks almost identical to mine.

I have the Norse 450 and the one I downloaded was the same as the one that came with my winch.
