I have an FDR 1560, Landpride finish mower, and I cannot remove the bolts that secure the blades. Before I apply too much torgue, please advise the loosening direction. If I am under the mower looking at the bolt and blade, the blades cut direction is counter clockwise, would the loosen direction of the bolt be clockwise?

How do I free the seized bolt? I have applied penetrating oil, I have tried an impact wrench. How can I secure the blade so that it does not rotate while I tried to loosen the bolt?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your Land Pride manual should show you the direction of rotation when viewed above or below the mower deck. The bolts probably are threaded in the opposite direction...probably, but maybe not. The manual may describe replacing blades...I should think it would. The Land Pride website is off line as I type this, so I couldn't confirm.

However, if you look at the blades, you should be able to recognize which edge is the cutting edge. That will also tell you the rotation direction.

I use a block of wood to block blade rotation...works for me.

I'm surprised your impact wrench cannot break the bolt loose. Does your air compressor have adequate volume to operate an impact wrench? Pressure is only one part of the equation.

What kind of penetrating oil are you using? Also, when you do get those blades off, make sure you use an anti-seize compound on the threads upon re-installation.

Thank you for your response. I checked the manual but there was no information regarding the thread direction of the bolts. I just got out there and slid a pipe over my already long socket handle and "horsed-it" in either direction until I felt some give. However, it turns out that the bolts are threaded "counter intuitive" (pun intended) they rotate in the cutting direction. They are now off.

Glad you solved the problem, there is a product that I use as a maintenance mechanic, Kroil. It is made by Kano Industries and it is the best (by far) penetrating oil that I have ever seen. They market many other products as well and I like them all. Silikroil is the aerosol version.

Uh, actually Aerokroil is the aerosol version, FWIW
I've used their products for years also, but I find some WD 40 left on overnight does just as well. Kroil smells better tho /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I couldn't get the blades off my ZTR last month, finally had to buy a 3/4" version of the socket and breaker bar, and I still had to use a 5' pipe to get 'em broke loose. I used some 90 wt EP on the threads. Came off easily when I put the mulching blades on this weekend. Be careful when using a block of wood to hold the blade, I found when I put a lot of torque on the nut, the blade bent down against the wood block - had to straighten the blade later.

Ditto on the Aerokroil. It is by far the best "monkey juice" I have ever used. It's kinda hard to find. Down here in south Louisiana, we have to get it from the oilfield supply houses.

You can order online at kanolabs.com. Just click on a product link and you can get a "risk free" purchase. With Kroil and PB Blaster, you can just about unstick any fastner.
