Generator Belt-driven vs PTO-driven generators

   / Belt-driven vs PTO-driven generators #21
i have had a multiple generators over the past 15 years, one of which is a generac pto 25kw unit. several others were/are gas driven units.

the pto generators are built like a truck. i think if you look at the weight of the two units you are comparing you would see substantial difference in the two. the generac weighs about 500 lbs. if you look inside of these units you will find large bearings and shafts, heavy duty gear boxes, all in all a very serious piece of equipment. you get what you pay for. the shaft in mine is about as big as your wrist.

the limitations of the pto generator have been discussed. now lets talk about the main vertue of these units. they are bullet proof. built for a lifetime of use , well after the gas units are dead and gone the pto unit will be in the shed, ready to go.

who uses a generator 24/7 in a power failure. most people just put them on for a few hours intermitently. how much fuel will you store for the gas generator, your diesel will always be fresh as you use it in your tractor, but stored gasoline may deteriorate.

the generator requires no maintenece unless you are using it. not so with the gas engine units.

if you put it on a trailer all you do is pull up, hook up and go,takes less than five minutes.

you will have much more in the way of a steady power supply with much less variation in voltage and frequency as the diesel has a great deal more torque than any gas engine powered generator. trust me you can load one of these beasts with some serious power requirements and that diesl just keeps on chugging.

the gas powered units seem to let you down (mr murphy is always present and available) when you really need them. as far as the tractor, it always seems to run.

these are the good points about the pto generators, that why the farmers like them so much.

the serious side of this discussion is the hooking up to the house, always have an electrician install a transfer switch for you, the gentran type switches could be installed by a handy man. dont make the inconvenience of a power outage turn into a catastrophe of a home fire, or an electrocuted lineman.

Generators:
Dairy farmers milk twice a day. If they don't have electricity to run all their machines they are in deep trouble unless they can milk by hand. Many have a PTO generator as backup as they need large generators for their powerneeds. This is cheaper than having a motor sitting there that is only required a few times a year.
