WILL A 4 POSITION LOADER VALVE HAVE ENOUGH HYDRAULICS TO OPERATE A ROOT GRAPPLE? THANK YOU. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The loader valve and its configuration has absolutely nothing to do with how much capacity or lifting weight your tractor can or can't handle. That depends on many other things especially the hydraulic pump gpm and the type of loader you have.

What tractor model and FEL model do you have?

FIlling out your profile and not posting IN ALL CAPS will allow us to better answer what your question really should be.

4630 kUBOTA, 853 loader. What I wanted to know, is if the root grapple takes more outlets than I curently have.

If it is a standard loader valve(2 handles or a single joystick) then all the ports are used. One movement for each lever movement or 1 for lift, 1 for dump. You will need a third lever for the grapple. Some do use a 2 lever loader valve with a grapple but it requires a type of remote control valve that with the flip of a switch, shifts one of the levers from it's normal job to the grapple cylinder control. Whichever is not selected is hydraulically locked in place.

In my opinion, it is probably less expensive to replace the standard 2 spool valve with a 3 spool valve or add another single spool valve in series with your existing valve(or use "power Beyond" capability if so equiped). The plumbing to add a grapple to the loader is simpler this way and there are no electrics involved.

Look in the "Customization" forum just below this one. A current thread is there showing one possibility. Pictures and all!

The absolute easiest and cleanest and probably least expensive method is to buy a diverter valve with a button that goes on the joystick that will shift one of the loader functions to your grapple function. Several people on TBN have gone this route and the installations are simple and professional looking. The diverter valve will mount on the loader and the connections are easy and clean.

PineRidge did a similar setup on his NH TC and there are several active threads right now where people have done similar things on JD's and smaller Kubota's.

Do a search for "grapple" and "diverter" and you will get plenty of information.

I too was puzzled by the first question, this makes sense. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You will need an extra set of ports with a lever to operate them. There are several ways to do that.

Some tractors allow another plate (or spool) to be added to the hyd stack. As you are dealing with a loader valve, this probably doesn't apply, but I don't know Kubota well...

Most tractors allow a set of rear remotes probably through a diverter or the power beyond setup. This will look nice, be easy to do, cost a bit, and be OEM equipment. You simply run hoses from the rear remotes to the grapple. Can also use this port for wood splitters, snow blower spouts, etc. Again, depends on what is available for your model.

You can usually tap into a 'power beyond' port on the current set of hyd spools and add a hyd valve, set of hoses, and mount the valve/ handle somewhere. This can be cheaper, and gets to look a bit Rube Goldberg sometimes, but effectively adds a set of remote ports for other uses too.

You can get those electricly controlled diverters, or port multipliers, that will plug into one of your current remotes, and multiplies it into 2 or more sets of remotes. Simple & easy to do, fairly cost effective. The downside is only _one_ port can be active at a time, so you need to choose with a button which way the flow is going - to your loader, or to the grapple, etc. Can be a little hard on the brain to remember what is what when using a loader, but works well once you get used to it.

Hope that's a start, see where you want to go? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Cost is $250 - 800 it seems, depending on option & difficulty of adapting your tractor to the setup you want.

The short answer is yes, the long answer is you have to use either a diverter valve where you push the button and divert one of your other functions to the grapple, But if you have a four positon valve with regenerative dump circuit you are limited to what function you can use. There have been numerous threads on this.
What I have on my L4330 is a valve plumbed into the power beyond port of my 4 position loader valve. That way you have a rocker swithch to operate your grapple and can still lift and curl at the same time. My valve came with the WR Long 4n1 bucket that I purchased with the tractor.
