I would appreciate some ideas on how to "easily" get a post hole digger on and off and stored upright in the barn. The dealer told me to assemble it on the tractor and hang it on a tree with a come along but I would like to get it indoors. Most times I will be doing it alone. Thanks, George

It depends a bit on what type PHD you have. My Leinbach has a single pin connection from the gearbox to the boom. I back mine into the corner/up against the wall of the barn and set the point on the ground. Remove the driveshaft from the PTO and pull the pin that holds gearbox to boom and leave the gearbox/auger stand against the wall with a piece of line to secure it. 3 pins later the boom assembly is standing beside it. Takes about 5 minutes tops. The boom by itself is hot a heavy lift and I don't have to lift the auger/gearbox, just stand it upright to attach/remove, so it is relitively painless. Also when broken down this way it only takes up around 3 SQ/FT of floor space(3' wide, 1' deep) along the wall of the barn.

If your structure can support it, hanging it or suporting it from above while most of the weight stands on the auger point would be my reccomendation.

Good luck

I do about the same as RonMar. Back up to a corner post of an old woodshed. Have a hook mounted on the post. Wrap a piece of chain around the PHD and hook on the chain, disconect everything and leave it. It's under the eves so stays fairly dry. Had it in the woodshed at one time but had to take it apart each time to take it out, just too much effort.

thanks guys for the replies and the link, Ron. I think I might give the pipe rack idea a shot. I'll be pulling down my present barn in a few months. If I hung the digger in there now it might start the process early. Merry Christmas George

Birddogger, I saw one on here awhile ago and it took me a few minutes to find it , This one has multiple functionality if your interested for inside storage... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hey George,
Inside space is too valuable to use it for storing my auger. There is nothing on an auger than can rust out so why keep it inside?

Here's a good way to safely store it outside. Just set two wood posts in the ground about a foot apart, nail a board or two to the back side to make a channel, back your auger head up in the channel, set it down with the point on the ground or on a block, and rope it to the posts so it can't fall.

Another option... I use a rolling rack from a store. It works pretty good. You can usually get them cheap when a department store goes out of business. They come on nice big casters which makes it movable as well.
