PTO shear pin advice.

I had an old snowblower (Snow King I believe) that had clutches on the drive auger and impeller. Greatest idea I'd seen for a large snow removal tool, especially with a gravel drive. I've yet to find another with like features /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

As for adding a PTO clutch I'm not sure how well that would work since the shear bolts are on the augers and impeller drive. That was were the clutches were on the old one and it is usually where I shear pins (auger). The PTO clutch may work to protect the impeller but with the gear or chain reduction to the augers I don't think it will work as well. If you find otherwise please post and let us know.

Thanks,
Michael

I sent an e mail to a dealer asking about installing the slip clutch on the snowblower; have not had a reply and have not called him about it.

Regarding having the slip clutch somewhere in the PTO lineup and still having the shear bolts in the auger and impellars, I was wondering about that too, because if I simply added a splitclutch, my guess is that the shear bolts would shear before the slip clutch slipped.

Short of somehow permanently sealing the shear bolt holes, my guess is that you would put in the stronger bolts (#5) so that they would not break before the slip clutch slipped.

Snowman,

I'd be interested in what the outcome is. However I have my concerns that due to the reduction (gearing or chain) between the drive shaft and auger shaft the slip clutch on the PTO won't work well. I have the most problem with the auger pins shearing and would like to have the slip clutches mounted on the auger drive shaft (like the old one I referenced). This thread has got me thinking about ways to add slip clutches to the auger shaft.

Good luck,
Michael

Wouldn't snowblowing be the worst possible environment for a slip clutch? If it gets rusty and sticks to itself (and will no longer slip) I would think that could be pretty bad. Or am I just being paranoid about the clutch sticking?

I plan to leave the sheer bolts in place (grade 2 bolts), and add the clutch. The clutch will have to be adjusted to slip before the bolts sheer. Maintenance of the clutch will be important too, but all the effort I think is worth it in my case since a sheered bolt means a run back to the house, repair job, then back to work.
