I am considering the SQ600 (5 ft.) Bush Hog brand rotary mower. I have been offered solid rubber rear wheel (standard) or laminated ($50. additional), slip clutch ($75. additional) and rubber front guard ($70. additional). What do you guys think of the SQ600? What options should I consider? I know the slip clutch will prevent breaking shear bolts, but is it a real problem and seem like a slip clutck could have it's own maintenance problems. BTW the base price is $635. PS seems like I am always asking questions. I would answer yours more if I was more knowledgable. Thanks.

John, The SQ600 is a fine implement; considered a "light" duty one. I used to have an SQ48 and used it for some pretty heavy duty work and never hurt it. My cousin now has an SQ600 and the salesman that delivered it demonstrated it by cutting down some 2" to 3" saplings (although I think Bush Hog only recommends up to 1"). Rubber guards are good; I made my own for my current rotary cutter. Chain guards are best, but very expensive to buy. I prefer shear pins to the slip clutch because there's no maintenance required on the shear pin until you break one, and I never have. However, if you're going to be working where there's a lot of rocks or other similar obstacles that would cause you to be changing the shear pins frequently, then the slip clutch is better. If you'll do a little checking on this forum, you'll find a number of earlier posts on the maintenance required for the slip clutches. I had the solid rear wheel on my SQ48 and I have a laminated one on my current Howse 500, and I still don't know why one is better than the other, although supposedly the laminated is better and does cost more. And that sounds like a good price, since my dealer wanted $695 for an SQ600.

Bird,

You forgot something! That your cousin owns an awesome New Holland Boomer and that was what was powering the SQ600 when it went through those 2-3" saplings ! ! ! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Yeah, you're on the ball tonight, JimBinMI./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif They had to see if it would do it because I'd already told them it was no step for my little B7100, 16 hp Kubota./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
