I am looking for suggestions on the size of a pull-type disc harrow for a Mahindra 6500 4wd. I would like something that doesnt make the tractor work at max apacity, but will still get the job done. I am thinking a 7.5 ' tandem. I have researched the kk and howse and other than that most of what i see are the plains type huge equipment. I may have to settle for a 3 pt rig, but would prefer the wheeled, drag type. thanks, chuck

swiftboot, I pull an 8' offset John Deere disc with 22" notched blades with my 7520. Most of the time it has worked well. If the dirt is soft, the tractor has to work a little harder. When I eventually load my tires I'm pretty sure that I will not have any problems whatsoever. I found my disc's used, paid $800 for them 5 years ago. Just put new discs on all the gangs today. Going to re-paint next weekend. Google offset discs and I'm sure you can find some.
Good luck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Search "Tuffline" disc's. I think they still make relatively small sizes. (7' to 10')

Smaller wheel disc's can be found on the used market. Just pricey compared to new. Good used ones sell fast. They're much better at their intended job than a typical 3-point model. They are more difficult to haul though.

I have the 3 pt type 6ft which hauls very easily in any type soil with my 55hp 4wd tractor. I put lots of weight on it and it does a decent job for my garden area which is all I use it for,and for that type of work the 3pt hitch type works well as I am only using it on one and a half acres at short runs so picking it back up to turn again is quick and easy..The wheel type would do a much better job for sure but this works ok for me.I am going to get a rototiller to pepare my seedbeds this summer as this will break up the soil much finer. The disc harrow works very well to go over the garden at the end of the growing season.
Good luck

An 8' transport disc would suit you well. It will out work a 3pt disc anyday and shouldn't tax your tractor too hard. There was a very nice Allis Chalmers disc on Ebay that sold for just over $500 with the cylinder. That was a great price and if you are not in any hurry keep checking ebay and you might find one. The auctions (either ebay or local) are the best place to find disc that size. However, local auction prices are usually a bit higher then ebay (at least in my area).

If money is no object and you want new then go to your dealer and see if they can order a Monroe Tuffline model as there are very few companies that make that small of a disc anymore.

Thanks to all who responded. I have about 30 acres to cut and it is riddled with 'bull holes", so an attempt will be made to level them out somewhat. Normally the disc would be used to cut smaller plots of 10 acres for winter forage rye planting and/or summer millet. For the leveling factor i think the drag type would fit my needs and i wouldnt be transporting off the farm anyway. A wheeled hydraulic type would be better to move around without too much trouble. Thanks again for the suggestions. chuck
