Just viewed the video and it looks pretty neat. Seems like most guys on the site are very happy with them, but there is very little information on how they work in heavy clay. The video showed very large tractors dragging the unit around in what appeared to be very sandy dry soil.

You fellas that have them and some experience with clay, could you share your experience.

I would also be currious if any use them for clearing brush. I would think a small tractor would be quickly stopped in it's tracks when raming multiple small sapplings. It is hard to judge the unit when you are guessing performance based on a 60 hp Ferguson!

Thanks

I rather doubt you want to think of the TR3 as a tool to clear brush. There will be enough debris at a new construction site like wire and bundle strapping that gets wound around the revolving drum, that you don't want to add twisted sapling stems.

I'd say clay, if very dry and hard, will be a challenge. But then it is a challenge regardless what you use, and certainly a tiller won't work it up any easier. It's a great tool for a purpose, but it isn't likely something that does every job.
I thought it might work up the packed gravel drive, but it didn't do that. The nubs on the rotating drum wouldn't penetrate, and it might be the same thing with dry clay. Water it down and get after it when before it is bone dry, might just be the ticket.
Hope this helps.

I did not know there was any sort of rotating drum? I thought there were scarifying teeth, a leveling blade, and a fixed raking device in the back.

Could you elaborate more, and any other experiences you have had with the rake? I sure appreicate it.

I think that Beenthere was confusing the TR3 with a Harley Rake.
However, his comments about heavy compacted clay are about the same whether it is a harley rake or a TR3 rake.

I built one for about $200. Using scrap metal at 25 cent per pound, Mostly 3 inch angle 3/8 thick. Used it on a couple lawns for new houses ( worked great). Pulled it with my 7510, I don't thick I would work very good moving brush, they tend to plugup and drag across the top of the ground.

Wow, JWD, that is some nice work. What are you pulling that with, a little BX.

Ya have any free time?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How does it do in hard ground? Does vegitation get bound up in the tines, or does it do ok? Any idea what the that beast weighs?

Really good work, thatnks for posting!

the grass gets caught up in the scarfire area when you get to much buildup , and will just drag it across the top of the ground. I would think its weight is at least 300LBS(but not sure) I pulled it with a Kubota 7510, also the ground out here in wyoming is really hard( from a few years of drought)Go to build it yourself and do a search for LS1 you will find more pic's of it

The TR# gets grass caught up in it also.
It does tear up my gravel drice to my shop great.
Have not really had a chance to play in the dirt with it much.
Did fix a very rutted dirt drive & it did fine there but cant really say much more.
We will see this sring in the clay.
I use 2 different field cults cut down to fit on my tc48, 4500 & 4720 .
one is a cut down Brady & the other is a cut down s tine noble & both work well so I think the tr3 I got should do well also.
