Opinions on the Scorpion Mower

There is one that is used to mow our church. It is used by a variety of different folks, and certainly not always treated the kindest, so, that is either a good or bad test depending on view.

It has literally been beat to pieces. I believe all the wheel mounts have been rewelded braced etc. last time I look all the original wheel units where sitting behind the church and I did not see the mower, so I am not really sure what has happened at this point.

I have looked at them, looked under them, and been around them but have not run it personally, but it was not a tool that I would buy.

Would you consider it more durable or less durable than a 3ph Finish Mower??

I can understand,, about hitting the rear corner wheels on objects,, and bending or breaking them,, however,, if they cannot stand up to normal turning, going forward or reverse,, then that would have to be taken seriously into considerations.

On the Actual Grass Cut,, how would you rate the Cut? Better or worse than a regular 2 blade/1 rear wheel Brush Hog?? Compared to a Finish Mower,, how did the cut compare??

For my money, I would rather have a regular rotary cutter for the rough stuff and a finish mower if I have a lawn. For my money, used and KK are pretty good values.

I believe sharp (relatively speaking) blades, low ground speed, and full PTO speed on my KK rotary cutter would achieve the same results.

In the lawncare world there are a lot of guys that swear by running "doubles" which is where you mount two blades in a cross pattern (and there are some adapters out there to do this as well). I was never impressed.

I was not there when the caster mounts broke off, so I really do not know how or what was going on, but my impression is they are too light / small for the rough terrain they are touted for mowing.

There is a reason for the bigger wheel and caster on a bush hog then a finish mower. I know our ZTR mowers with bigger wheels and tires give a much smoother ride then the smaller tired versions.

Resurrecting this topic.

I was curious about the J-Bar Scorpion mower because of the fact that it has 4 wheels, and 4 blades.

Seemed like a happy medium between a brush cutter or a finish mower. Basically, I have a 1.5 acre field and some lawn to cut, but we're not insistent on a golf course quality finish. I was thinking a brush cutter with sharp blades might be enough, then I saw this thing.


I'd be interested to hear opinions and/or experiences with this unit.

I came accross the J-bar Scorpion rotary cutter. The cutter is at the bottom of the linked page. As near as I can tell it's a rotary cutter with four swinging blades rather than two.

Has anyone had any experience or have any opinions with this type of mower? Will it still cut thick brush? Does it really leave things looking better than standard rough cut mowers?

This unit appears to be somewhere between a Finishing Mower,, and a regular brush hog.

I'm particularly interested in the "4 Blade Unit",, and if the Blades are mounted as Stump Jumpers.

It looks to me,, like this unit might do an acceptable job on mowing the Yard,, as well as taking on light duty Brush Cutting as well,, but haven't seen one in person,, or seen the underside,, which I would need to do,, prior to actually making the purchase.. However,, a 40 hp gearbox,, is what I am looking to get,, for my tractor.

I own one. it is a good mower in some aspects. it cuts grass, and i have cut up to 2" brush with it very well. the deck is thin, i had to have it reinforced with cross supports. the hard rubber tires are starting to brake up also. but all in all as cutting manchine it works great if you can get past the other things. its mine now so i got to put up with these things. hope this helped
