PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

Is 24.5 PTO HP enough to run a 4" wood chipper? Any info. on HP required to run certain implements would be very helpful.
thanks

It should be though it would depend on how big of limbs you would stuff in it's throat and how fast you fed it.

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

I run a Valby CH160 6 inch chipper on my Ford 2120 with 34.5 PTO hp.. It works well as long as I watch the hardness of the wood and the speed I feed it at., The chipper definately works better on my TN with 62 PTO hp. I believe that the power required is a square root function of the diameter ratio of the wood being chipped. Assuming this is the case, 25 hp on a 4" chipper should preform about the same as 35 on a 6".

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

I figure 3-4" maximum dia. Even the 4" would most likely end up in the wood stove next winter. The 3" stuff would probably go into the garage stove anyway. But I figure a 4" should be a good size for me just to grind up the brush that's leftover. As for feed, I'm thinking I'll hold out and go with autofeed. I saw a short video on one of the Chinese Brands which was about $1600. or so ( my budget), about a 1.5 hr drive away, crated. Anyone have one of these? If so, are you satisfied with it?
thanks

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

Thanks, math not being my strong suit. Is the square root formula used the other way around or am I not using my calculater correctly. EX: I get the sq root of 4 being 2, yet the square root of 24.5 (HP) is 4.9, or 4.9". Or, in your case the sq rt of 35 (HP) comes up 5.9, or 5.9 inches? Anyway, like I said, I'm a math idiot who hasn't referred to square roots in too many years! Any clarification would be great!
Thanks

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

Brown,

I think he means that if you take the square root of the PTO Hp, then that number is the approximate maximum limb diameter you can chip up. You have about 25 Hp, so you can probably do a 5" limb. Your question on a 4" limb then has an answer of "sure, no problem". He does 6" limbs with 35 Hp and has noticably better performance with a 60 Hp tractor. So, he is a bit over the capacity of the 35 Hp tractor when chipping 6" limbs.

Your math is ok, but it is just a rough guide, not an absolute law.

Can you post a link to the China Chipper? (thanks)

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

I have a Jinma 6" chipper. I run it off a L3130 - 27hp at the pto which seems to drive it with ease.

If you buy one crated, there are some good threads in tbn on these chippers and what you need to do in order to properly commission them.

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

Hi BT. I have one of the Chinese 6" capacity chippers. I run it on my 28Hp Chinese Jinma. This chipper is GREAT. it chips everything I have ever put in it. (done several hundred pine tree trimmings,)I cut the lower 6-8' of limbs off of about 500, 40' pines.so the lower limbs were from 1" to 6"diam. I even had some pines get the top 10' broken off last winter and pushed the whole thing in the chipper at once. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED. If you lived closer I'd let you take it to try it!
as for the 4" chippers. they are hard to get.most dealers only order and stock the 6" ones. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

We have sold alot of the Jinma 6" woodchippers, they are a great bargain for the money,On the 24 PTO hp tractor you should be able to chip 4"-5" material with out much problem,
If you have not seen one check them out.If you want more information you call PM me

Re: PTO HP for a 4\" chipper

I run a WoodPRO AVP chipper/shredder (Mfd by Vandermollen and rated to chip 6" and require 22 pto hp) on my B7800 (22pto hp) and it runs just fine. I don't use it on 6" wood, though; anything more than about 4" diam goes to firewood.

Once you get the machine up to speed, a great deal of the actual cutting power is being supplied by the intertial force created by the mass of the flywheel. What the pto hp is overcoming is the tendency of the material being cut to slow the flywheel down.

I agree w/others that 24.5 hp is enough, you may just have to slow down feed a bit when chipping max diam. hardwoods.
