Hey all. I’m looking to buy a 9-foot disc mower to replace my aging sickle mower. So I’m looking for pricing info on the various brands out there. And reliability reports, such as are there certain things that wear out on these types of mowers? How often do you sharpen the blades? Likes/dislikes with certain brands? I’m generally looking for pricing info, but any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks for any and all replies.

TKComer,
If you a looking for a low end oil-bath cutterbar disc mower like a Fort/Morra also sold under First Choice & Yellow Jacket brand names.
Agri-Supply has that 9'2" disc mower for $5,033.95 fully assembled with the Freight Included.

I talked to my uncle yesterday. He mentioned he had priced an 8 footer 3 years ago, but the $4000 price scared him. That and the fact the dealer told him his IH 484 tractor wouldn’t handle it very well. It was for a New Idea mower the dealer had lying around for awhile. Another New Idea dealer quoted $7500 for an 8 footer they had in stock. I guess that’s what has me scratching my head. A $3500 price increase on the same brand and size mower in a little over 3 years. Uncle also mentioned a “friend” that had one on a 65 HP tractor. No idea what tractor or brand of mower. “Friend” said that was all that tractor wanted. My uncle did say a disc mower could trim ¼ of the time off of a large field due to the fact you rarely ever stop it over a sickle mower. I’d still like to hear if there are any common problems on these mowers. I have a tendency to stock parts for problem areas in the equipment I have. Heck, I still have parts for equipment I no longer own.

The US$ lost 25% of it value plus & steel tripled in price during this time period. The New Idea cutterbar is made by Comer in Europe so that is why the loss in the US$ value to the Euro contributed to the price increase.

If you want the cutting technology of a disc mower for less than $3,000 the CCM drum mowers are a hay mowers you might look at.

I just sold a tractor, so I now have the money. Probably be looking at a purchase in about May. I’ll be trying to get a loader installed in about 3 weeks. Then weld some sort of hook to the bucket so I can lift things. I like to buy local, but so far the dealers around here are way high on their attachments. They seem to be running about 700 to 1000 bucks over the very same piece of equipment I find elsewhere. Of course, that piece of equipment is always over 500 miles away. I saw the drum mowers. Kinda small for my application. I’ve got my choices pretty much narrowed down. Of course, I had my choices narrowed down on a tractor until I stumbled on to a used one. That ain’t gonna happen with a disk mower around here. Thanks for the replies so far.
