Like is so often the case, it depends on what you want to do with it.

Easy, clean ground where you are cutting light grass and you're set-up is okay. Anything thicker or heavier and you'll have trouble. I would think 4' is the max you'd want to put on that tractor.

A five-foot cutter is ideal for the Ford 9N/8N/NAA/MF20 etc. because the size and weight of the tractor are more proportional even though these tractors are only in the 25hp range.

I ran a 5' Fred cain behind my Kubota L2250 for about 5 years. The tractor was rated at about 22 PTO hp and weighed about 2300 pounds. After adding about 200 pounds to the front of the tractor it handled the mower ok. I'd be leary of that much weight on a lighter tractor.

I know nothing about Fred Cain cutters, but I operated a 5 foot (625#) Land Pride cutter behind a smaller Deere 670 (16.5 PTO HP, 19 HP Gross). An internet search on Fred Cain cutters revealed the 5' unit weighs ~ 700 pounds...can your 3PH handle that? You'll want at least 200# of suitcase weights up front if you don't have a loader.

As long as I had the loader installed, there was no problem moving the cutter raised (watch those turns though...slow and easy is the way to go).

As for cutting, I was going through thick brush, most of which was as tall as the cowl of the tractor.

So, with common sense (and weight on the front of the tractor), you can operate a 5' cutter with a 20 HP tractor.

By the way...what kind of tractor do you own?

You should be able to run that 5' cutter. You may have to make partial width passes in heavier thicker brush if the tractor bogs down.

I have a Fred Cain 104, 4 footer and use it on my B7500 and it'll cut anything I can get under it! They are beasts, rock solid and use bush hog blades and gear boxes.

I don't see a problem in tall pasture grasses, weeds etc. I think it'll be too heavy in some situations. I believe that 20hp has enough umph to spin the blades but I think it's a weight issue more than anything.
