How much traction does R4 really offer over turf tires. It seems the large size of the turfs which = larger surface area may counteract the smaller treads. My R4s leave pretty noticeable ruts a lot of the time.

When/how would you really notice the difference on the R4's added traction benefits? Working deep dirt maybe?

I don't know how R4s compare, but, turfs work great for everything I use them for, including ground-engaging trail maintenance work in atv trails. When you use four wheel drive, and turfs, you have so much traction anyway. When the ground is wet, the small tread balls up with mud and you loose. Then its time for tire chains, and you can go anywhere again.

I have R4s and they give very good traction for FEL work, including excavating (using a toothbar). I have used my FEL to excavate a small (20'x80') pond to a max depth of 8'. R4s gave me all the traction I needed. They're not so great in mud, but neither is anything else, short of chains.

I can't compare to Turfs, because I have never used 'em. I don't have much of a problem with the R4s tearing up my ground, so long as it is not too soft. I mow with an MMM in the summer w/out significant problems.

Hope this helps

Turfs will not clean themselves in mud at all in short order you will loose traction. The R4s shed mud as they turn over and dig in to give some traction (not as well as R1s but worlds better than turfs).

I have seen your posts about how moist your land is, only choice I see is to suck it up get some R1s and repair your ruts as required.

I do not think you are necessarily stuck with either. My thought is both would have compromises that may be hard to live with. The R4 tires are hard and are meant for pushing and pulling, but they can be slick in wet or muddy conditions. The turfs I do not think will fit your needs. You may wish to look at other options. Galaxy Tire provides multiple options to fit your needs, as they make about every type industrial tire known. They offer tires that are hybrids, such as R4 tires with high floatation for soppy conditions, or turf-type tires that have knobs spaced more widely for grip. Check out their website and you might just find the tire for you.

I prefer the R4s. Traction can be a problem with turfs. On my JD 2210, I had issues with traction. I think the lack of weight on the 2210 was the bigger issue.
