I just bought a Rhino HPHD post hole digger with a 9 inch auger. It's a beast. Somehow I managed to get it attached to the tractor PTO by myself, but I don't ever want to have to do that again. I know they make a display stand for these, but I'm wondering how other people store them. Has anyone built or seen a stand for storage. I'd like to be able to store it where the boom is in the right position for attaching it to my tractor. If anyone has plans or pictures, I'd sure like to see them.

Thanks,
Doug

Got a tree in back, outta the way?

I use a 1" nylon racheting strap and hang it there. Makes it simple to mount/unmount.

I built one last summer for my Danuser PHD which is also a beast. I'll take a pic tomorrow morning and post a link to it sometime during the day.

Doug,

I did the same thing as you. Attached my PHD one time and hit the shop to make a stand! Mucho easier! I should have used much larger casters.

Here are some pics that were taken when it was made. I didn't use a plan, just a chop saw, tape measure and some liquid steel.

Doug, this is what I use and it works very good, not portable though. 4x4's, a couple of brackets to hold the top removable 4x4 and some screws. Less than an hour to install.

I've got one of those stands -- and use it out in the woods -- but I also hang my PHD when it's in the shed at my other place .... hanging is better...I use a cheap, small, chain hoist and it makes it a lot easier when you're able to move the PHD up - down - around - with ease.... On the stand it's still at one level - no up - down movement without breaking your back. Of course unless you have a stand with casters like John above - it's gonna stay where you put it - hanging or on a stand.

5-7 dollars per hole. Is this an average price to have somebody come in and do it for you???????? I was thinking of buying one anyways /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My S-I-L bought the Rhino HD PHD. She also paid about $100 for the stand. It's 2 flimsy pieces of rod that clip into a bracket on the PHD. My advice ... don't buy it. I have to go over there and mount it for her and it's as awkward as ****. Any of the designs shown here would be better. With my PHD, I do what Mike suggested. I hang it from a tree limb with a $40 chain hoist. It makes it so much easier to move around and up and down to get it hooked up when it is hanging. No tree ... build yourself one. Believe me, having it hang is the only way to go. Stands are OK but the Rhino stand would be way down my list.

OK, Doug: Here are the pictures of the PHD Dolly that I built for mine:

Dolly #1

Dolly #2

Sorry that there are some other attachments/dollies in the way, but it's a bit crowded in the part of the barn where I keep these; particularly, at the moment since I'm in the process of building a log splitter about 10 feet from the area shown in these photos.

As you can see, I use 2x4s for lighter attachments and 2x6s for heavier ones. The PHD was fine w/ 2x4s. The upright framework is doubled 2x4s, corner braced at top and base by single 2x4s.

I then hang the PHD from a chain in the middle. This allows me to easily bring the 3ph mounts up to attach them to the tractor while the stand continues to bear the weight of the attachment. This dolly took a couple of hours start to finish and is well worth the effort not only because it makes mounting the PHD easy; it also makes it easy to move it around in the barn.

Hope this helps.
