Look what followed me home today...

I asked the manager if he could make me a deal if I purchased both items at the same time. Sure enough, he knocked off 10%! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif It never hurts to ask.

Any recommendations on where to purchase the gear lube and what kind?

Congrats on the purchase. I just picked up a KK tiller today too. The store gave me a quart of 85w140 gear oil. Doesn't TSC sell some fluids? Also remember to grease the drive shaft & end bearing.

I just purchased a KK 48" tiller from TSC last week. They do sell all the lubs you need. The tiller manual specifically references 85w140 gear oil, which TSC sells. I think 2 gallons cost about $22. I used about 2/3 of that two gallons on my 48" (so you will need more than 1 gallon).

The tiller was fairly grease happy as well.

I was just telling someone over in one of the JD forums how awesome these tillers are. I was expecting a lot considering the price, but so far the KK has FAR exceeded my expectations.

Thanks for the replies. I'll swing by TSC this morning and get the lube and some grease. I hope to be tilling tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How did you use so much oil? I recently filled a KK 48" tiller and used less than one gallon. I filled the top gearbox to 1/2 as specified and the side gearbox to the overflow hole. Did I miss something?

Thanks, Daniel

I agree with you, Dan. I just bought the 72" tiller and the side gearbox took just less than two quarts before it was running out the overflow hole. The PTO gearbox only took 1 quart to halfway full.

Now, I suppose my side gearbox could have had some residual fluid in it from the factory test, but 1 qt seems like a lot.

What did take a lot of lube was the carrier on the opposite end from the gearbox. There's a large void in there and it took about 1/3 tube of grease. That will get a little lube everytime I use the tiller.

Was your PTO shaft pre-greased? Mine had so much grease on it that I got it all over me while installing it. I'm not complaining though. Too much grease is much better than too little. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I love that KK tiller so far. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jim

Good to hear that I didn't miss something. Other people have reported using more oil than this and I began to wonder. Maybe they are filling the gearboxes full.

Ya know..... i have been looking and looking at tillers myself. Strangely.... whenever i've been to the area tractor dealers, not ONE of those darned tillers has followed ME home !!

Now you guys have me wondering!

Maybe there is more left in the two gallon jug than I thought. I know I tried to only fill the gearbox half way. Who knows...sorry if i confused anyone.

Question for you guys...are you letting the tiller rest on it's tines or are you putting blocks down?

Quick question, while greasing the carrier opposite the gear box I felt some resistance to the grease gun. I was thinking that I was getting close to filling it and I didn't pump too hard on the handle. After about two pumps I heard what sounded like a quick rush of air (sort of a small fart, if you'll forgive the expression). I was waiting for grease to come out of the zirk/nipple. Could I have blown a seal or was it just air rushing out normally? I stopped and never did get grease to come out of the zirk. Probably paranoid, but I don't want to ruin the tiller before I've put it in the ground. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
