Bush Hog, Brush Hog, Rear Mower, Etc. Prices

I am in the market for a 5 foot Brush Hog or Rear mower, or whatever you want to call them for knocking down small trees and brush. What are some good brands and how about used prices on them? Anything I should look for when shopping for one? Such as, slip clutch, versus shear pins? None of this brush or trees will be over 2 " thick, I hope. Usually bigger than that gets cut for firewood. Go to the TSC website and enter your zip code. You will then know the price at your nearest store. I bought a Kingkutter 60" rotary mower yesterday for $649. Buy some extra shear pins at the same time just in case you need them. The KK brand is relatively cheap, solidly built with heavy I beam sides but has a crappy paint job. But, on the other hand, are you willing to pay $1250 for nicer paint and a slightly better machine? Make sure that the PTO shaft is not too long!! You can do severe damage to your tractor if it is. It should shorten by at least 6" from normal installed length to the compressed length.

I went low price and bought a Howse 6' rotary cutter for $550 6 years ago. I have not been disappointed. It mows my pasture well and cuts brush and sapplings when I need to. I cleared a lot of brush and small trees along an overgrown creek and fence rows when I first bought my place. Don't see how a $1500 dollar machine would have done any better.

I have always bought the lower cost brands with shear pins and never had a problem and never regretted saving the money. For the kind of use you are describing, one of the lower cost machines should last for years.

Used prices are going to vary alot but I'd think you could find a 5' used brushcutter for $300, I bought a used 6' for $225 3 years ago.
