Middle Buster & Subsoiler

What are they and when do you use them? Instead of a plow? In addition to a plow?

For breaking up hardpan, and, with optional furrowing shovel, for making small ditches. I've also used one for cutting tree roots prior to removing stumps with FEL, and for preparing planting holes for trees. Very handy.

Sort of like my ripper with pipe layer. Except mine can dig a bit deeper. Sounds like the subsoiler. Refer photo.

The wide blade would never get thru my hard ground.

Neil, a subsoiler normally is longer overall length than a middle buster, so it'll go deeper, and the blade is angled farther, although there are a few "combinations" on the market on which you just change the blade. I have the middle buster (great for digging potatos), and sometimes change the blade to a single heavy duty chisel plow blade, to dig narrow trenches.

I would suggest that you get the implement that Bird describes. It allows you to switch between the Middlebuster and Subsoiler. I wish I had.

I have used mine to create furrow for planting potatoes and then for havesting (pops those spuds out just real fine!!), trenched around my property to bury a hidden dog fence, trenched a friend property to bury electric line. Will be using it to trench to replant some hazelnut shrubs and rhubarb plants.

A good tool for the money.
