I found a feed wagon for sale near me. It's built on a 8 ton Kory frame. The wagon has a PTO driven 2 speed gearbox that runs the feed system on it. The trailer dumps out the rear, either through two large gates that open or a small one that slides up at the bottom only allowing about a 3" opening. The feed mechanism is made up of two large chains that run down either side of the trailer floor with angle iron cross pieces between them to pull the load to the gate. I've never used a feed wagon before and what I need to know is are they useful for spreading things other than food. For example could you spread lime or fertilizer with it? I realize it won't throw it out to the sides like a broadcast type but would it feed it ok out the back of the trailer and at a good rate for spreading on a small field? Also can you use one to haul and off load gravel or something like that? John

Generally you can put 1/3 as much of the materials you mention, or they will bust.

Bigger items like corncobs - or big rock in gravel - will get under the chain & derail it.

Check that floor webbing closely if it is old used, those chains wear out on the bottom, & then all you do is shovel out load after load & fix busted chain......

I'll take a look at the floor webbing. Thanks for the info on it. So that type of spreader would probably work good for spreading a finer material like lime? Do they work ok with fine gravel like you'd use for a driveway or concrete or would those be too big and derail the chain? I'd probably only want to put about a ton in it at a time. Thanks, John

Does anyone else have any experience using a feed wagon like this? If so how do you think it would do with lime? We've only got a couple of acres to do and can't get anyone in to do a small area like that. We only live a few miles from the quarry where they get lime here so if we could use it to haul a ton, or even half a ton and spread it that would be perfect for us. John
